Hydroxyzine Information: What Is Hydroxyzine and Side Effects
Generic Name
Generic name of the medicine is hydroxyzine. It is used to treat anxiety disorders under certain circumstances. In stressful situations hydroxyzine depresses the activity of central nervous systems and thus provides relief from anxiety.
Hydroxyzine also acts as antihistamine and thus useful for treating skin allergies. Sometime hydroxyzine may increase the effectiveness of certain painkillers and therefore may also be used for relieving pain.
Hydroxyzine can also be used for other purposes also.
Precaution
- If your doctor recommends you hydroxyzine , tell your doctor if you are allergic to hydroxyzine.
- If you have or had heart, kidney or liver disease, you should inform the doctor before taking hydroxyzine.
- Older people above the age of sixty should not be given hydroxyzine with caution.
- Many medicines may increase the effect of hydroxyzine such as other antihistamines (brompheniramine, chlorpheniramine, azatadina and many other antihistamines), narcotics ( hydrocodone, oxycodone and codeine and many other narcotics), sedatives (seobarbital, Phenobarbital and other sedatives) and antidepressants (amitriptyline, doxepin, paroxetin, fluoxetine and other antidepressants), if you are taking any of the above medicines or any other medicine whether prescribed, non-prescribed, food supplements, vitamins or herbal products, you should inform your doctor.
- If you are pregnant or breast feeding mother, make sure to inform your doctor. Although what side effects it may cause to unborn child is not known, it may recommended with caution for pregnant and breast feeding women.
Warning
- The medicine may cause dizziness and drowsiness and therefore after taking hydroxyzine do not drive and operate heavy machineries.
- Alcohol may increase the dizziness and drowsiness caused by the medicine and therefore you either avoid alcohol or use alcohol with caution.
Overdose
- You should only use the recommended dosage of hydroxyzine and if you suspect an overdose you should immediately contact to your doctor.
- The symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness, hallucinations, stomach problem, decreased breathing, weakness, fatigue, nausea and vomiting.
Missed Dose
- If you missed a dose, take as soon as you remember the missed dose. If it is almost the time of your next dose take a single dose.
- Never take double dose at a time.
Side Effects
- Side effects of hydroxyzine cannot be anticipated and however the side effects will vary from person to person.
- Severe side effects of hydroxyzine are the allergic reaction of the medicine. If you observe any of the symptoms of allergic reaction of the medicine such as breathing problem, swelling in face or lip or tongue, irritation or difficulty in throat and hives, you should immediately contact to your doctor.
- Some common side effects may include dizziness, hallucinations, decreased breathing, fatigue, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth and diarrhea.
- If any of the side effects as mentioned above or any other side effects are observed, you should immediately contact to your doctor.
How to take
- Take hydroxyzine exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
- Take the medicine with a full glass of water.
- The exact quantity of liquid hydroxyzine should be measured with the measuring spoon, provided with the medicine. Do not measure the medicine by ordinary spoon.
How to store
- The medicines should be stored at room temperature between 15 to 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
- The medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture and should not be refrigerated.
- Outdated medicines should not be used and should be destroyed to avoid misuse of the medicine.
