Enalapril and felodipine
Elapril is an ACE (angiotension-converting-enzyme) inhibitor and felodipine is calcium channel blocker. Elaprin prevents the narrowing of veins and arteries and felodipine widens blood vessels. Both the medicines together are used for treating high blood pressure. The medicines can be used for other applications also. These medicines should be taken only if prescribed by your doctor.
Precautions:
- Enalapril and felodipine when taken with certain other drugs, may change the effect of the medicine. If you are taking any other medicine such as diuretics, potassium containing salt, lithium, anti-inflammatory drugs (non-steroidal), potassium sparing diuretics and potassium supplements, you should consult your doctor before taking enalapril and felodipine.
- If you are pregnant or plan to pregnant, you should not take enalapril and felodipine.
- If you are breast-feeding, you should inform your doctor before taking enalapril and felodipine. If it is necessary to treat you with enalapril and felodipine, you should stop breast-feeding.
- Enalapril and felodipine may cause dizziness, therefore you should not drive or operate heavy machineries or perform any other hazardous activity after taking these medicines.
- If you are allergic to enalapric, felodipine or any other medicines of these classes, inform your doctor before taking enalapril and felodipine.
Warning:
- These medicines may cause a serious allergy known as angioedema. The symptoms of angioedema are swelling in your face, throat lips, tongue or difficulty in breathing. If you had these symptoms earlier or after taking the medicine, you should immediately seek emergency medical help from your doctor.
- In no case you should take these medicines, if you are pregnant especially during second or third trimesters (after the first 3 month) as this medicine is known to cause serious damages to unborn child.
- If you have liver problem, kidney problem, diabetes, heart disease or taking restricted diet and potassium supplements, tell your doctor before taking enalapril and felodipine.
- Some ACE inhibitor may cause blood disorders, you should ask your doctor to check your blood at regular intervals.
- Do not use alcohol, as alcohol may further lower blood pressure and may increase weakness and dizziness.
- Use of potassium supplements, if required should be done under the guidance of your doctor.
- Sweating, dehydration and diarrhea can cause your blood pressure to drop immediately. You should consult your doctor for taking the appropriate dose of enalapril , if you suffer from any of the above problems.
- Grapefruit or grapefruit juice may sometimes interact with felodipine. So avoid taking grapefruit or grapefruit juice at least 2 hours after and before taking the medicines.
Overdose :
- An overdose of enalaprin and felodipine may suddenly drop your blood pressure and causes symptoms like dizziness, weakness and fatigue, fainting and chest pain.
- The overdose of these medicines may also cause breathing problem, irregular pulse and confusion.
- You should seek immediate medical help, if you observe any of these symptoms.
Side Effects:
- The side effects of enalapril and felodipine may include severe allergic reactions, angioedama ( swelling of face, lip, throat and difficulty in respiration), asthma, chest pain, little or no urine, severe dizziness or fainting, fever. If you observe any of these side effects, you should consult your doctor immediately.
- The common less serious side effects include headache, dry mouth, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and weakness, excessive urination, weakness and rashes in skin.
- Some other side effects may also occur. In all such cases you should consult your doctor.
How to take:
- You should take the medicine only if prescribed by the doctor.
- The enalapril and felodipine can be taken with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed with water.
- If you missed a dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. If it is time to take next dose, take only a single dose. You should not take double dose.
- You should not stop enalapril and felodipine with out consulting your doctor.
How to store:
- Enalapril and felodipine should be stored at room temperature preferable below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
- Medicine should be kept out of excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used.
