Gaviscon: Side Effects
Generic Name
Generic name of the medicine is aluminum with magnesium hydroxide. It is an antacid and is used for treating heartburn, acid ingestion, peptic ulcer and hiatal hernia. It is also useful for treating reflux esophagitis that is stomach acid reflux. It neutralize the acid in stomach and thus reduce acid also produce a viscous material that floats on the stomach content and act as barrier for reflux of acid content.
Gaviscon can also be used for treating other forms of stomach ulcers caused by excess acid and is also useful for preventing ulcers and bleeding from ulcers.
Precaution
- If your doctor recommends you gaviscon , tell your doctor if you are allergic to gaviscon or any other medicine containing aluminum or magnesium.
- If you or any other member in your family had kidney or liver disease. You should inform the doctor before taking gaviscon.
- If you have or had appendicitis, inform your doctor before taking the medicine.
- Older people suffering from Alzheimer disease should not be given gaviscon.
- Gaviscon may alter the effects of some of the medicine such as rifamate, nizoral, mandelamine and tetracycline antibiotics. If you are taking any of these medicines or other medicine whether prescribed, non-prescribed, food supplements, vitamins or herbal products, you should inform your doctor.
- If you are pregnant or breast feeding mother, make sure to inform your doctor. Although what side effects it may cause to unborn child is not known, it may recommended with caution for pregnant and breast feeding women.
Warning
- Gaviscon may be reactive towards some class of medicines as cations of aluminum and magnesium may interact with the absorption of some of the medicine and if you are taking any other medicine, you should inform your doctor.
- If you have kidney problem, you should take advise from your doctor as Gaviscon may impair renal functions. Magnesium may accumulate in blood plasma and causes kidney problems.
- The medicine may cause dizziness and therefore after taking gaviscon do not drive and operate heavy machineries.
- If you are on sodium-restricted diet, inform your doctor before taking gaviscon.
- Children below 6 years of age should not be given gaviscon otherwise recommended by the doctor.
Overdose
- You should only use the recommended dosage of gaviscon and if you suspect an overdose you should immediately contact to your doctor. The symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness, stomach problem, weakness, fatigue, nausea and vomiting.
Missed Dose
- If you missed a dose, take as soon as you remember the missed dose. If it is almost the time of your next dose take a single dose.
- Never take double dose at a time.
Side Effects
- Although if gaviscon is taken as prescribed, hardly any side effect is reported.
- However, some common side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth and diarrhea.
- If any of the side effects as mentioned above or any other side effects are observed, you should immediately contact to your doctor.
How to take
- Gaviscon is available in chewable tablets and liquid form.
- The chewable tablets should be chewed four times a day after meal or at bedtime. Do not swallow the medicine as whole. Take half a glass of water or liquid after that.
- The liquid gaviscon should be taken four times a day after meal or at bedtime. Take half glass of water after taking liquid.
How to store
- The medicines should be stored at room temperature between 15 to 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
- The medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture and should not be refrigerated.
- Outdated medicines should not be used and should be destroyed to avoid misuse of the medicines.
