What is tamsulosin hydrochloride (Flomax)?

Flomax comes in capsule form and is indicated for the treatment of BPH. BPH stands for benign prostatic hyperplasia, which is an enlargement of the prostate gland.  This condition occurs only in men, and Flomax is intended for use by men only.  Flomax is an alpha-blocker.

How to Take Tamsulosin Hydrochloride

 Follow your physicians’ instructions and take the medicine exactly as directed. Flomax capsules should be taken on a regular basis, after the same meal each and every day.  The capsules should never be crushed or chewed; they should always be swallowed whole.  As with all prescription medications, keep Flomax stored out of the reach of children.

What Are the Side Effects of Tamsulosin Hydrochloride?

Like any prescribed medication, Flomax can cause a variety of side effects.  Some more common side effects that have been reported when using Flomax are listed as follows:

  • Headache
  • Back Pain
  • Chest pain
  • Infection
  • Insomnia
  • Dizziness
  • Decreased libido
  • Diarrhea
  • Stuffy nose
  • Nausea
  • Increased cough
  • Fainting
  • Vision changes
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Unusual weakness
  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue.
  • Retrograde ejaculation.
  • Constipation
  • Trouble breathing
  • Sever, unexplained tiredness

Warnings and Precautions Before Taking Tamsulosin Hydrochloride

  • Do not use this medication if you have had an allergic reaction to an alpha blocker in the past such as alfuzosin or terazosin.
  • Do not use this medication if you have prostrate cancer.
  • Do not use this medication if you have high blood pressure without first informing your physician.
  • If you have decreased kidney function, consult with your doctor before beginning this medication.
  • Do not operate a motor vehicle or heavy machinery until you are aware of how Flomax will affect your ability to do so.
  • Never take vitamins, herbal products or other medications in conjunction with Flomax before consulting your physician.
  • If you are allergic to sulpha drugs, make your doctor aware of this before taking Flomax.

 

What to Do If You Take an Overdose of Tansulosin Hydrochloride

If you suspect that you, or anyone else, have taken an overdose of Flomax, seek immediate medical attention.  Symptoms of an overdose may include, but is not limited to dizziness, weakness, cold or clammy skin, a fast pulse, fainting, possible loss of consciousness, and maybe even coma.  Although there have been no reported cases of overdose with this medication, an overdose is most likely to result in low blood pressure, which is a condition that requires immediate medical attention.

What To Do If You Miss a Dose of Flomax

Take the missed dosed as soon as you realize you have missed it.  If it is near time to take another doe, skip the missed dose and only take the regularly scheduled dose.  Under no circumstances should you ever take two doses at once.  If you forget to take your medication for more than a few days, consult your physician before restarting it, as a lower dose may be indicated.

How To Store Flomax

Flomax capsules should be kept on the original packaging until ready for use.  Never store near a sink, bathroom or a in a hot car.  The medication should always be kept in a cool, dry place.  Do not use the medication after the expiration date on the package, and as with all prescription medications, keep them out of the reach of children.
