Clonex / Klonopin Drug Information

What Is Clonex / Klonopin?

Clonex, or klonopin, commonly prescribed generically as clonazepam, is used to treat convulsive disorders, such as epilepsy.  Clonex is also used in treatment of panic disorders.  Clonex should only be taken as prescribed by a physician.  While often prescribed with other medications to aid in the treatment of epilepsy, there are some medications that should not be used while taking clonex.  Consult your physician before taking any medication, and inform your doctor if you are already taking prescriptions before clonex is prescribed.

How to Use Clonex / Klonopin

Use clonex only as prescribed by a physician.  This medication can be taken with food if nausea occurs, but can also be taken without food.  If you are taking clonex, do not discontinue use of this medicine unless you consult with your physician first.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Taking Clonex / Klonopin?

While not a controlled substance, there are some side effects that may result from taking clonex.  If any of these symptoms persist or grow progressively worse, inform your physician.

  1. Drowsiness

If experiencing drowsiness while taking clonex, do not drive or operate heavy machinery.  Persistent and regular drowsiness should be reported to your physician.

  1. Fatigue

Extreme drowsiness may lead to feelings of fatigue, causing patients to experience extreme sleepiness during the day.  If you notice prolonged periods of fatigue or frequent napping during the day, inform your physician.

  1. Weakness

Patients taking clonex may observe a general feeling of weakness that often accompanies fatigue and drowsiness.  Feelings of excessive weakness should be discussed with your doctor.  Do not try to combat feelings of weakness, fatigue, or drowsiness by taking over-the-counter caffeine pills or energy drinks without consulting with your physician first.

  1. Dizziness

Patients taking clonex may experience feelings of dizziness or lightheadedness.  If these feelings occur often, and/or for long periods of time, inform your physician as soon as possible.

  1. Dry mouth

Increased dryness of the mouth may be observed while taking clonex.  Your physician will have tips and advice on ways to combat this side effect.

  1. Changes in appetite

Patients may notice changes in appetite while taking this medication.  Extreme under or over eating habits should be reported to your physician, who may want to prescribe additional medications to treat this symptom.

  1. Diarrhea

Patients may suffer from bouts of diarrhea while taking clonex.  Inform your doctor if frequent or regular bouts of diarrhea occur.  Your physician will advise you on methods of treatment for this side effect.

  1. Nausea

Those taking clonex may notice nausea or vomiting while on this medication.  Taking clonex with food often helps settle the stomach.  If frequent feelings of nausea persist, inform your physician.

Warnings and Precautions Before Taking Clonex / Klonopin

Clonex can cause certain birth defects, and women in the first trimester of pregnancy should not take clonex.  Inform your physician if you are pregnant or may become pregnant.  You may want to explore alternate medications for the duration of your pregnancy.  Nursing mothers should not take clonex, as it can be transferred to the infant through the milk.  Inform your physician if you are nursing before taking clonex, and switch medications for the duration of the time you plan to nurse.

What Should You Do If You Miss a Dose of Clonex / Klonopin?

If you missed your scheduled dose of clonex, take your dosage as soon as you remember the missed dose.  Clonex should not be double-dosed, however, so in cases when it is almost time for your next dose of clonex go ahead and skip the missed dose.  More than one dose of this medication should never be taken at any one time, and two doses of clonex should not be taken too close together.

How To Store Clonex / Klonopin

Clonex should be stored in a tightly closed container and kept away from heat and moisture.  Clonex should not be stored in the bathroom, where it could be exposed to hot, wet conditions.  Keep this medication out of reach of children.  Often, clonex will be prescribed in a closed container that is safe for storing purposes.  Expired and outdated clonex should not be taken, and you should consult with your physician to learn proper disposal methods of this drug.
