Dextroamphetamine

What is Dextroamphetamine?
            This medication is used to treat narcolepsy and children with ADD. It is also sometimes used to treat depression.              

How should Dextroamphetamine be taken?
            This medication is to be taken by mouth 2 to 3 times a day. It is to be taken at meal time with food or a glass of milk. Do not use this medication in children under the age of 3 years? Take your daily dose at least six hours before bed time. If you miss a dose take it when you remember it but not if it is an our before the next dose if it is skip this dose and take the next dose and go back to your schedule do not take 2 doses at once. Do not stop this medication without talking to your doctor about it first.
             
Precautions for taking Dextroamphetamine.
            Never take an MOI with this medication also check with your doctor if you are taking any of the following medications:

• Chloroparsmazine
• Thyroid hormones
• Meta blockers
• Digitalis

This medication also has a high risk of becoming habit forming this si rare in children but in adults it happens frequently. When children are taking this medication they should be checked frequently by their doctor to see how it is affecting him/her. Do not give this medication not a child under 3 or an adult over 60. Do not take if you are breast feeding or pregnant or will become pregnant while on this meds. Also be sure to tell you doctor if you have any of the following problems:

• Epilepsy
• Glaucoma
• Heart disease
• If you will have surgery
• If you will be going under any medical tests.

Side effects of Dextroamphetamine.
            Some on the side effects of this medication are as follow:
            Common side effects

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Restlessness
• Weight loss

            Rare side effects

• Abdominal pain
• Headache
• Mood swings
• Nervousness
• Hives
• Blurred vision

IF you have any of the rare symptoms tell your doctor right away. Be sure to tell your doctor if any of these symptoms become bothersome for you.  
                       

Possible food and drug interactions with Dextroamphetamine.
            Do not take this medication if you are using an MAO inhibitor tell your doctor what other prescriptions you might be taking other prescription and non prescription drugs, this also include vitamins and herbs. Be sure to tell your doctor if anyone in your family has had thyroid problems, anxiety, depression, or mental illness. Talk to your doctor about drinking fruit juice with this medication also.

Overdose
            If you think you or anyone you know has taken an over dose call poison control immediately and call 911 for an ambulance because overdose of this medication could be fatal. Symptoms of overdose can include any of the flowing:

• Confusion
• Aggressive behavior
• Feeling of panic
• Hallucinations
• Dark red urine
• Burred vision

If you feel you have any of these symptoms call for an ambulance immediately.

Storing your medication.
             Keep this medication in the container it came in keep it out of the reach of children keep it away from light heat and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom if the medication is out of date throw it away.
