Etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring:
Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring . This belongs to the combination hormonal contraceptive (birth control medicines) class of medicine. The medicine contains estrogen and progestine, female hormones and used to prevent pregnancy. Etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol vaginalring is very effective birth contol device and work in many ways including preventing of release of eggs from ovaries and preventing male sperm to enter to ovaries
Precaution:
- If you had or have high blood pressure, heart attack or valvular disease, inform your doctor before taking the medicine.
- If you have diabetes, severe obesity, depression, thyroid problem,liver or kidney problem, discuss with your doctor before taking the medicine.
- If you are suffering from vaginal bleeding, breast or cervical cancer, you should inform your doctor.
- The medicine may be less effective, if you are overweight.
- If you have a history of epilepsy, migraine, headache, you should inform your doctor.
- If you have gallbladder problem or high lipids and cholesterol, you should inform your doctor.
- If you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, you should not use Etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring.
- If you are nursing mother prescribed with etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring, you should not breast-feed.
- If two drugs are taken together, they may interact with each other. If you are taking any prescribed or non-prescribed, food supplements or herbal medicine, you should inform your doctor before taking etonogestral and ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring.
Warning:
- Etonogestrel and ethinyl vaginal ring cannot protect you from infecting yourself from sexually transmitted diseases.
- In case you have missed the ring for 3 hours, a seven days backup additional contraceptives should be used to avoid pregnancy.
- If your age is more than 35, you should avoid cigarette smoking.
- You should carry out regular check up including your breast checkup.
Overdose:
- You should not use double ring at a time.
- The symptoms of overdose may vary from person to person.
- The symptoms of overdose may be nausea, vomiting, vaginal bleeding or irregular menstrual period..
- If you observe any of the symptoms or any other symptoms, you should contact to your doctor immediately.
Side Effects:
- The common side effects of etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring may include headache, skin rashes, change of color of skin, dizziness, change of weight and breast irregularity.
- The more serious side effects include allergic reaction (swelling in face, lip throat and difficulty in respiration), vision problem, blurred vision, sudden darkness, chest pain, pain in arms and legs, vaginal bleeding, yellowness in skin and eyes, dark urine, lumps in the breast, pain in legs/groin, numbness in the arms/legs, mood change, abdominal cramps, headache, dizziness, vomiting, breast lumps, fatigue, swelling or tenderness in abdomen.
- Some other side effects may also be observed. If you observe any of the symptoms as mentioned or any other symptom, you should talk to your doctor immediately.
How to take:
- Etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring should be used in consultation with with the doctor.
- You should use one ring for exactly three week (during your menstrual period), after three week, the ring should be removed and a new ring should be inserted to the upper part of vagina after one week (Cycle 3 weeks on and 1 week off). Follow the same procedure again and try to insert the new ring at the same time after one week.
- If the ring falls from vagina, wash the ring and apply as soon as possible but within 3 hours. If you have taken more than 3 hours to reinsert the ring you need additional contraceptives ( but not diaphragms) to avoid pregnancy.
How to store:
- The ring should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children
- The etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used.
