Accolate
What is Accolate?
Accolate is prescribed to asthma patients to prevent them from having an asthma attack. However Accolate will not stop an asthma attack once it has started you still need an inhaler when you have an asthma attack.
How should Accolate be taken?
Accolate should be taken twice a day, even if you do not have any symptoms of an asthma attack coming on. Never take Accolate with food allow at least one hour to pass before eating or wait to hours after eating to take the medication.
Precautions for taking Accolate.
While taking Accolate do not stop or cut down on this or any other asthma medication unless directed to do so by your doctor. Also remember Accolate will not help when you have an asthma attack you will still need your inhaler to stop an attack. If you have been taking an oral steroid drug and your doctor decides to cut back on your dose there is a chance that complications will follow. So be sure to let your doctor know if you have experienced new symptoms because they could be signs of serious side effects caused by this medication.
Side effects of Accolate.
Most common side effects could include headaches, infection, and nausea.
Less common side affects also include….
- Abdominal pain
- Accidental injury
- Allergic reaction
- Back pain
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Fever
- Indigestion
- Vomiting
- Weakness
If these side effects become bothersome be sure to talk to your doctor to see what can be done about them.
Possible food and drug interactions with Accolate.
If you have a full stomach it can reduce the affect the Accolate will have on you. So it should not be taken with food for no reason. If accolate is taken with other drugs it is especially important to make sure you check with your doctor before taking accolate with any of the following medications….
- Aspirin
- Asternizole
- Blood thinning drugs
- Carbamazepine
- Cyclosporine
- Erythromycin
- Heart and blood pressure meds
- Phenytion
- Terfenadine
- Theophyline
- Tolbutamide
Be sure to talk to your doctor if taking any of the above because a drug interaction could result in death at times so it is better to be aware of what could happen before it dose.
Recommended dosage for Accolate.
The recommended dose for an adult and a child twelve years of age and over is 20 milligrams which goes two times a day and the usual dosage for a child five to eleven years of age is 10 milligrams twice a day.
Overdose
As with any medication it has its serious consequences when an over dose is taken symptoms of an over dose would include a rash, and an upset stomach, vomit and nausea may also occur. So if you think you have taken an over dose be sure to contact your poison control and local emergency room and get medical attention immediately.
Storing your medication.
Keep this medication in a dark dry place and keep it away from any direct sunlight and moisture. And keep it at room temperature and of course you may well know that it much be kept out of the reach of children and animals.
