Estraderm:
Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is Estradiol . Estraderm is used for relief from discomfort especially after menopause. Vaginal dryness, burning, itching, and urinary problem, difficult intercourse, hot flashes are some of the discomforts after menopause. Estraderm is sometimes also prescribed for preventing osteoporosis. Estraderm may also be used for other purposes not listed here.
Precautions:
- If you have allergy to androgen, estrogen or any other steroid, inform your doctor before applying Estraderm patch.
- If you have breast cancer, estrogen may increase tumor.
- If you observe any vaginal bleeding during the estrogen therapy, you should immediately contact to your doctor.
- If you have heart, kidney or liver disease, estraderm should be prescribed with caution.
- If you have a uterus cancer, estraderm may increase the tumor.
- If you are having high blood pressure, high lipids and high blood sugar, inform your doctor before inserting estraderm.
- If you are suffering from porphyria, estradiol may worsen the disease.
- Estraderm when taken with the combinations of other drug may change the effect of the medicine. If you are taking any other drug, you should consult your doctor before applying estraderm.
- If you are pregnant or plan to pregnant, you should not use the estraderm
- If you are a nursing woman taking estraderm, you should avoid breast-feeding.
Warning:
- Long-term use of the medicine may increase the risk of endometrial cancer.
- If you have a history of breast cancer and you are on estraderm. You should carry out a regular breast check up. You should carry out check up of your gall bladder also at regular interval.
- If your age is more than 35, you are advised not to smoke.
- You should also carry out regular check ups for your general health including eye check up.
- Take Estraderm as directed by the doctor.
Overdose:
- An overdose of estraderm may cause the symptoms like dizziness, nausea, weakness and vaginal bleeding.
- You should seek immediate medical help, if you observe any of these symptoms.
Side Effects:
- The possible side effects of long-term use of estraderm may include liver related problem, liver cancer and peliosis hepatitis. The prolonged use of Estraderm may increase the risk of uterus lining cancer.
- The common less serious side effects include acne, allergic reaction, gall bladder problem, swelling and tenderness, headache, high blood sugar, skin rashes, spots in face and other parts of skin, dizziness, cervical changes, clotting disorders, depression, migraine, dry mouth, yellowness in face and eyes, cough, nausea, vomiting, constipation, lumps in breast, vaginal yeast infection and diarrhea and weakness.
- Some other side effects may also occur. In all such cases you should consult your doctor.
How to take:
- Estraderm is available in a sealed patch in a protective pouch.
- A protective liner covers adhesive side. Remove the liner carefully and without touching the adhesive apply it immediately.
- Apply adhesive to the dried skin on trunk of your body. Do not apply on breast. Rotate application site and a gap of one week is desirable between application of a particular site.
How to store:
- Estraderm should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
- Medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used and thrown out.
