Generic name: Bendroflumethiazide

Brand name: Naturetin

What is Bendroflumethiazide?

This medication is used for the treatment of high blood pressure. It works by getting rid of extra fluid (salt and water) in the body.

Bendroflumethiazide belongs a group of drugs called thiazide diuretics. Thiazide diuretics act inside the kidney, removing water from the blood and turning it into urine, through increasing the removal of salts such as potassium and sodium from the blood. This removal of salts causes water to be drawn out of the blood and into the kidneys, at a faster rate.

Removing water from the blood decreases the volume of fluid circulating through the blood vessels. The drop in fluid volume results in a drop in the pressure of the fluid within the blood vessels, which then helps to lower high blood pressure. It also decreases the effort required by the heart to pump blood around the body.

Remember that this type of medicine will not cure your high blood pressure but it does help control it. If high blood pressure is not controlled, it can cause serious problems such as heart failure, blood vessel disease, stroke, or kidney disease.

How to take Bendroflumethiazide?

This drug may be taken by mouth with food or milk to reduce stomach upset. But because this drug increases urination, it is better to take it early in the day. It is best to plan your dose or doses according to a schedule that will least affect your personal activities and sleep.

What are the side effects of Bendroflumethiazide?

  • This medication may cause dizziness and lightheadedness, especially during the first few days as your body adjusts to it. Rise slowly from a seated or lying position in order to minimize the impact of dizziness or lightheadedness.
  • Blurred vision, loss of appetite, itching, stomach upset, headache and weakness may also occur during initial therapy as your body adjusts to this medication. In fact, this medicine may cause you to have an unusual feeling of tiredness when you begin to take it. After you have taken the medicine for a while, these effects should lessen. If these effects persist or worsen, however, notify your doctor promptly.

  • Inform your doctor promptly if you develop: muscle cramps, weakness, pain, nausea, vomiting.
  • In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction usually are: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, troubled breathing.

  • Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Although most of these side effects may not actually occur, if they do occur then you may need medical attention.

  • Tell your doctor your medical history, especially if you have any problems related to: gout, diabetes, liver problems, urinary problems, or any allergies (especially to sulfa medications).

  • Kidney function declines as you grow older. Therefore, elderly people may be more sensitive to its adverse effects.

  • This medicine may cause a loss of potassium from your body.To help prevent this your doctor may want you to eat or drink foods that have a high potassium content (for example, orange or other citrus fruit juices), or  take another medicine to help prevent the loss of the potassium in the first place, or take a potassium supplement.
