Finevin

Generic name

Azelaic Acid

Background

This medication is advised for the treatment of acne. It inhibits the growth of bacteria and hence it reduces the spread of acne and in many cases it reverses the condition. It is also known to open the skin pores and clear them off infections and hence stopping acne.

This medication is available only in the form of cream.

Sometimes this medicine is used  for melasama as well.

Dozage

The doctor is the best judge of what should be the dose for you. Follow the instructions closely not only in the dosage but also the time of the treatment. It is important that you do not discontinue in the middle or you will have the acne return, or worse the acne problem will worsen.

Generally, the application will be about two times per day, once in the morning and once in the night. Initially, you will have to apply the cream only once a day, but after a few days, if there is no reaction, then you may proceed to use it twice a day.

In case you miss one application, you may apply as soon as can or remember. If it is too close to your next application, then do not apply twice at too close intervals.

Warning precautions, overdose

There are a few precautions that you should apply before using this drug and these are enumerated below:

  • In case you have tendencies to allergy to any type of food, or compound let the doctor know so he/she will know whether or not you can be prescribed the drug
  • If you are pregnant you should not use this medication
  • Similarly, if you are breastfeeding you should not use this drug as it can be passed to the infant through the milk which may cause harm
  • Do not use this medicine for children as it has not been tested and the reactions have not been monitored
  • In the same manner this medicine has not been tested on adults over 60 years of age and hence should not be administered to them either
  • You need to inform the doctor of all the extra medication that you use while you propose this drug since it may combine and react negatively
  • Once you start using this medicine you should not, under any circumstances, stop in between because it will make the acne worsen
  • In case your face becomes too red, or it starts peeling, you will need to check with your doctor for adjusting the dosage.
  • Do not use other medicines at the same time with the application. If you have other medicines prescribed, try to take it at some other time.

How to Use

Since this is a cream and it comes only in the form of cream it is used only to be applied externally.  This has to be applied smoothly on dry skin, in a thin film over the area that is affected by acne. The most important thing is to see that it is absorbed; however it should be gently and not in a rough or vigorous manner. This medicine should not be ingested, hence after applying you ensure that you wash your hand very thoroughly. In the same line of thought, you should not allow this cream to get into the eyes or any other place from where it can go internally.  If it does it should be immediately washed with water.

Side effects

There are some rare side effects such as skin whitening where the cream has been applied. This is not very serious, but it needs to be brought to the attention of the doctor so the dosage may be adjusted.

The more common side effects are tingling of the skin immediately on application, dryness, mild itching, reddening of skin, peeling, etc.

Whatever change you see on your skin after application of this cream, you will need to inform the doctor immediately so he/she can know whether the medicine has to be stopped, reduced or increased.

How to store it

This medicine may be stored at room temperature. It actually should not be refrigerated. There should no direct heat falling on it, or light. Keep away from the reach of children as it is extremely harmful if ingested.
