Fluorouracil

What is Fluorouracil?
            This medication is used to treat many types of cancer such as colon cancer, rectum, breast, stomach etc. It may also be used to treat other types of cancer as well if your doctor feels the medication is right for your type of cancer.

Things to talk to your doctor about before using this medication
            Before you start taking this medication be sure to talk to your doctor about the risks of this medication before taking this medication the following things should be considered first:

• Allergic reactions to this meds- tell your doctor if you have had any allergic reactions to this meds before.
• Pregancy- Also tell your doctor if you plan to get pregnant or are pregnant. This medication is known to cause harm to an unborn baby it might also cause birth defects so be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or will become pregnant. This goes for both men and women if a man is taking this medication and causes his wife or another woman to get pregnant it could hut both the mother and the child. However there has been only one case where the baby has been born with sever birth defects. This medication can also cause a man to become sterile and unable to make a baby but this is not know to last long it has only been temporary but should also be kept in mind. Also talk to your doctor if you are breast feeding again it is not known if this medication will pass into the babies system through breast milk, however it is likely so it is best not to breast feed unless your doctor tells you that it is save to do so. But it is not recommended for the baby’s safety.
• Children-This medication is also often used in children and is not known to cause any different effects in children as it does in adults.
• Elderly- This medication is not normally give not the elderly so there is no telling how it will work on them or if it is safe for them to take. However doctors feel it is safe for a child to take it may be safe for the elderly to take as well.

Keep a list of all the medications you are taking so your doctor knows to see if it will interact with this medication at his time there are no know drug or food interactions. Be sure to tell your doctor all the medications you are taking even if they are non prescription such as, vitamins, allergy meds, and also any herbal remedies you might be taking.

Precautions when taking this medication
            If you have other medical problems it might not be safe for you to take this medication or it might affect the way it works on you so be sure to tell your doctor if you have any of the following medical problem:

• Chicken pox
• Herpes
• Any infections
• Kidney disease
• Liver disease

So tell your doctor if you have any of this so he can tell you if this medication will work for you or not. Also tell your doctor if you have ever been treated with radiation or chemo
or any other type of cancer treatment. 

If you have any one living in your house hold who has polio or is taking a polio vaccinations be sure you keep away from them or any one else who is taking anything to treat polio because there is a good chance they might infect you with it. Do not get close to them or stay in the same room with them for a long period of time. IF you have to live with them and cannot keep away from them be sure to wear a mask around them to cover your nose and mouth.  Also be careful around people who have any type of infection or cold because you can get it. Also do not use anyone else’s toothbrush or eat with anyone else spoons. Be sure to talk to your doctor before having any dental work done.

Side effects of this medication
            There are common, less common and rare side effects of this medication. Tell your doctor or nurse if you have had any of the following side effects:

• More common side effects- Diarrhea, heartburn, sores in mouth or lips.
• Less common side effects- Black tarry stools, fever, chills, side pain, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain.
• Rare side effects- Chest pain, unable to breath, loss of feeling in hands and feet, trouble with balance.

There are times when these side effects do not need immediate medical attention but if they bother you talk to your doctor about them.
