Glyburide and Metformin: Side Effects
Generic Name
Generic ingredients of the medicine are glyburide and metformin. It is the combination of two drugs sulfonylurea and biguanide.
Glyberide with metformin is used for treating non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (Type –II).It stimulates the pancreas to stimulate insulin and helps in reducing blood sugar and restores the body’s response to insulin.
Glyburide with metforbin should be taken only if prescribed by the doctor. Glyburide can be other purposes also.
Precaution
- If your doctor recommends you glyburide with metformin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to glyburide or metformin.
- If you or any other member in your family had or have kidney, thyroid, type I diabetes, liver or heart disease. You should inform the doctor before taking glyburide.
- If you are planning to have a surgery including dental surgery, inform your surgeon that you are on glyburide with metformin.
- Glyburide with metformin may interact with any other medicine and may increase or decrease the effect of the medicine. If you are taking any other medicine whether prescribed, non-prescribed, food supplements, vitamins or herbal products, you should inform your doctor.
- Glyburide with metformin is not recommended during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant , you should contact to your doctor who may recommend insulin in place of glyburide with metformin.
- If you are a breast-feeding mother, inform your doctor before taking glyburide with metformin. Your doctor may replace the medicine with insulin.
Warning
- The medicine may cause dizziness and therefore after taking glyberide with metformin do not drive and operate heavy machineries.
- If you have a kidney problem, you should not take the medicine.
- The medicine can also cause to decrease vitamin B12 level in blood. Your doctor may carry out annual monitoring of vitamin B12.
- If contrast agent is required for carry out X-ray, inform your doctor that you are on glyberide and metformin.
- Glyberide part of the medicine may cause more risk of cardiovascular disease in comparison to the treatment of diabetes with diet alone. You should consult your doctor for the possible risk of the medicine.
- You should follow other treatment advised to you such as diet and regular physical exercise.
- Avoid alcohol as alcohol may increase the dizziness caused by the medicine and alcohol can also causes to decrease blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and lactic acidosis. In lactic acidosis, lactic acid buildup in the blood which may cause symptoms like light headed, cold , dizziness, muscle pain weakness, irregular heart beat. If you observe any such symptoms, you should contact to your doctor immediately.
Overdose
- You should only use the recommended dosage of glyburide and metformin.
- The overdose of the medicine may cause low blood sugar and lactic acidosis and if you suspect an overdose you should immediately contact to your doctor.
Missed Dose
- If you missed a dose, take as soon as you remember the missed dose. If it is almost the time of your next dose take a single dose.
- Never take double dose at a time.
Side Effects
- Some of the serious side effects include difficulty in breathing, swelling in face, throat, and lips, skin rash, yellowing of skin or eyes, fever, sore throat and sunburn.
- Some common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting.
- Glyburide with metformin may cause either a low blood or high blood sugar, lactic acidosis and you should ensure the proper remedy if any of the situations occurs to you.
- The symptoms of low blood sugar include shaking, headache, anxiety, difficulty concentration, nervousness, confusion, sweating, dizziness and sudden hunger. You should keep sugar or candy always with you and eat if such symptoms occur and you should contact to your doctor immediately.
- The symptoms of increased blood sugar include increased thirst, increased urination, extreme hunger and blurred vision.
- If any of the side effects as mentioned above or any other side effects are observed, you should immediately contact to your doctor.
How to take
- The medicine should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor and swallow the medicine with a glass of water.
How to store
- The medicines should be stored at room temperature and out of reach of children.
- The medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
