Estradiol Vaginal Ring:
Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is Estradiol vaginal ring. Estradiol vaginal ring is used for relief from discomfort especially after menopause. Vaginal dryness, burning, itching, and urinary problem, difficult intercourse are some of the discomforts after menopause. Estrdiol vaginal ring may also be used for other purposes not listed here.
Precautions:
- If you have allergy to androgen, estrogen or any other steroid, inform your doctor before inserting estrdiol vaginal ring.
- If you have breast cancer, estrogen may increase tumor.
- If you have breast or cervical cancer, inform your doctor before taking estrogen therapy.
- If you observe any vaginal bleeding during the estrogen therapy, you should immediately contact to your doctor.
- If you have heart, kidney or liver disease, estradiol vaginal ring should be prescribed with caution.
- If you have vaginal infection, it should be treated before implanting estradiol vaginal ring. If you develop a vaginal infection, then after removing the ring, the infection should be treated and ring should be reinserted.
- If you have a uterus cancer, estradiol may increase the tumor.
- If you are having high blood pressure, high lipids and high blood sugar, inform your doctor before inserting the ring.
- If you are suffering from porphyria, estradiol may worsen the disease.
- Estradiol vaginal ring when taken with the combinations of other drug may change the effect of the medicine. If you are taking any other drug, you should consult your doctor before inserting the ring.
- If you are pregnant or plan to pregnant, you should not use the estradiol vaginal ring.
- If you are a nursing woman taking estradiol, you should avoid breast-feeding.
Warning:
- Long-term use of ring may increase the risk of endometrial cancer.
- If you have a history of breast cancer and you are on estradiol. You should carry out a regular breast check up.
- If your age is more than 35, you are advised not to smoke.
- You should also carry out regular check ups for your general health including eye check up.
- Take estradiol vaginal ring as directed by the doctor.
Overdose:
- An overdose of estradiol may cause the symptoms like dizziness, nausea, weakness and vaginal bleeding.
- You should seek immediate medical help, if you observe any of these symptoms.
Side Effects:
- The possible side effects of long-term use of estradiol may include liver related problem, liver cancer and peliosis hepatitis. The prolonged use of estradiol may increase the risk of uterus lining cancer. Male like voice and hair growth may also sometimes be noticed with the prolonged use of estratest.
- The common less serious side effects include acne, allergic reaction, gall bladder problem, swelling and tenderness, headache, high blood sugar, skin rashes, spots in face and other parts of skin, dizziness, cervical changes, clotting disorders, depression, migraine, dry mouth, yellowness in face and eyes, cough, nausea, vomiting, constipation, vaginal yeast infection and diarrhea and weakness.
- Some other side effects may also occur. In all such cases you should consult your doctor.
How to take:
- Estradiol vaginal ring is an opaque ring containg a reservoir for estradiol. This ring releases estradiol in a fixed amount for 90 days and released estradiol is absorbed through human parts.
- This ring should be inserted to the upper third of the vaginal vault and should be allowed there for 90 days. If necessary a fresh ring should be inserted after 90 days.
- If the ring slips down to the lower vagina, push the ring to upper vagina by finger. If the ring falls out at any time, first wash it with warm water and reinsert.
How to store:
- Estradiol vaginal ring should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
