Elavin
Generic Name: Generic name of elavin is ampitriptyline and is an antidepressant medicine. Elavin is supplied in suspension, tablets 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg, 100 mg and 150 mg. The medicine should be taken only if prescribed by the doctor.
Precaution:
- If you are on MAO, you should not take elavin and at least a 14 days gap is required to switch over from MAO to elavin.
- The dose of elavin should be gradually increased to avoid the overdose.
- All precautions should be taken while prescribing elavin to patients with a history of seizers, liver problem and urinary retention.
- Patients with cardiovascular disorders, if prescribed elavin, should be monitored continuously.
- If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, you should inform your doctor before taking elavin.
- If you are breast-feeding, you should not take elavin.
Warning:
- Elavin is not recommended for children below 12 years of age.
- Elavin should not be prescribed for patients recovering from myocardial infarction resulting from congestive heart failure.
- Electric shocks and elavin, if administered together may increase the hazard of electric shocks. In such case, electric shocks should be given to patients, where it is essential.
- Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma hould be monitored carefully if prescribed elavin.
Overdose:
- You should take the dose as prescribed by the doctor.
- Sign and symptoms of overdose may vary from person to person.
- The overdose may cause disturbed concentration, confusion, dizziness and visual hallucinations.
- The overdose may also cause higher heart rate, irregular heart beats, impaired conduction as observed in ECG, convulsion, coma and constipation.
Side Effects:
- Some of the side effects of elavin include dizziness, nausea, change in mood, headache, change in sense, difficulty in breathing, headache, sweating, and convulsion.
- Some common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, anxiety and insomnia.
- If any of the side effects are observed, you should immediately contact to your doctor.
How to take:
- The medicine should be taken only if prescribed by the doctor.
- The medicine should be taken in appropriate dose as directed by the physician.
- The elavin should not be discontinued abruptly.
How to store:
- The medicines should be stored at room temperature and out of reach of children.
- The medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used and should be destroyed to avoid misuse of the medicines.
