Eldepryl
Generic Name: Generic name of eldepryn is selegiline hydrochloride. It is prescribed for people with parkinson’s disease. It is one of the best irreversible inhibitor of MAO (monoamine oxidase). Since eldepryl has greater affinity for type B, it serves as an inhibitor of MAO type B, if it is prescribed in an optimized dose.
MAO (monoamine oxidase) are everywhere in our body and type A MAO are in high concentration in intestine and MAO type B are in higher concentration in brain.
Precaution:
- In initial stage of Parkinson’s disease, the deficiency of dopaminergic neurons to synthesize dopamine can be overcome by mild medicines levedopa in combination with carbidopa.
- After a few years, the effect of these medicines either decreases or the side effect increases, in those stages MAO B administration is required.
- Some patients given eldepryn may experience some side effects associated with levodopa/carbidopa, which can be reduced by reducing the doses of levodopa.
- Only a few informations are available about the use and working of eldepryl. So, all the precautions should be taken while prescribing eldepryl.
- Patients should be continuously monitored and if required dosage of levodopa should be reduced.
- Eldepryl should be taken as recommended.
- Eldepryl should be prescribed during pregnancy with caution.
- If you are breast-feeding, you should consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
Warning:
- Elderly should not be taken more than the recommended dosage of 10 mg/ day.
- The combinations of medicines such as tricyclic antidepressant or selective serotonic reputake inhibitors and elderly should not be used.
- Atleast a 14 days gap should be maintained between the discontinuation of eldepryl and administration of tricyclic antidepressants or selective serotonic reputake inhibitors.
Overdose:
- Since the overdose should not be increased by the recommended dose of 10 mg/ day, as selective inhibition of MAO B is achieved at this level only, overdose if prescribed may cause significant inhibition of both MAO’s.
- Sign and symptoms of overdose may vary from person to person and include drowsiness, dizziness, faintness, severe headache, convulsions, hypertension, irregular heartbeats, and difficulty in respiration, agitation and hyperpyrexia.
Side Effects:
- Some of the serious side effects include difficulty in breathing, swelling in face, throat, lips, severe headache, sweating, and convulsion, uncontrolled movement of body.
- Some common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, anxiety and insomnia.
- If any of the side effects are observed, you should immediately contact to your doctor.
How to take:
- The medicine should be taken only if prescribed by the doctor.
- The recommended dosage of eldepryn for selective inhibition of MAO is 10-mg/ day and should be taken 5-mg capsules at breakfast and lunch.
How to store:
- The medicines should be stored at room temperature and out of reach of children.
- The medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used and should be destroyed to avoid misuse of the medicines.
