Griseofulvin: Dose, Treatment and Side Effects

Griseofulvin is the generic drug prescribed by doctors for the treatment of ringworm infections.  Griseofulvin is sold under various brandnames such as Grisactin, Grifulvin, Gris-PEG and Fulvicin.  It works like penicillin, an antibiotic especially used to treat ringworm infections.

Griseofulvin is effective for antifungal infections such as ringworm of the skin and nails, Athlete’s foot, Barber’s itch or inflammation of the facial hair follicles.  It is effective in curing ringworm infections but there is no proof that Griseofulvin can cure other antifungal infections other than the above list.

How to administer Griseofulvin

Griseofulvin is an oral medication for the treatment of ringworm infections.  Doctors advise taking this medication during mealtime, especially including fatty foods.  Fatty foods will help in the absorption of this medication.

Patients should take Griseofulvin will 8 full ounces of water.

Treatment of ringworm infections may vary from few weeks to few months depending on the location where the infection lies.

It is advised that you ask your doctor all the details of your Griseofulvin treatment before leaving his office.  If the procedure is not clear with you, ask your doctor or his assistant to explain it further.  This will ensure that you will be able to take this medication properly.

You may also be advised to avoid drinking alcohol.  Alcohol may cause rapid heart rate and flushing of the skin.

Finally, do not stop taking this medication when you feel better, complete the treatment as advised by your doctor.  There is possibility that you will feel better even before you are cured.  Thus, to avoid recurrence of your infection, complete the medication.  It is the best to ensure that you will get the benefits of taking Griseofulvin.
