What is it?
Fluvastatin is in the category of drugs referred to as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. This medication is used to reduce the amount of cholesterol and fatty substances that appear in the blood. It works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body. It is also used to slow down the progression of coronary artery disease. When cholesterol accumulates along the walls of the arteries, it decreases the blood flow, and therefore reduces the amount of oxygen to the heart, brain, and other vital organs in the body.

How to take it?
Fluvastatin needs to be prescribed by your doctor. It comes in two forms: capsule and extended-release tablet form and is taken by the mouth. It should be taken with a full glass of water. An individual usually takes it once a day at bedtime or twice a day. You can take this medication with or without food. You should try and stick to a schedule and take it the same time every day. You should never alter your dosage without first consulting with your doctor or heath care professional.

Warnings and Precautions
If you are going to take this medication your doctor needs to know if you have a history of liver or kidney disease, chronic muscular disease or a blood disorder.

They are some drugs that can possibly interact with this medication. If you are taking cimetidine, ranitidine, refampin, glyburide, and phenytoin, you need to advise your doctor before taking this medication.

You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant or breast-feeding as it could have a negative effect on your unborn child or baby.

If you are taking this medication you need to avoid exposure to sunlight and you need to wear protective clothing and you need to avoid exposure to the sun while on this medication. You should also avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication as it can have a harmful effect on an individual.

If you are going to have elective surgery, including dental you need to inform your doctor. An individual will need to stop the usage of this medication at least twenty-four to forty-eight hours prior to having the surgery performed.

An individual on this medication will also need to follow a low-cholesterol, low fat diet. This type of diet along with the medication will help to reduce the amount of cholesterol in the individual’s body. They should eat, fish, vegetables, poultry, and egg whites, as part of this diet. Avoiding such foods as meat, whole milk, cream, lard, and bakery goods will help an individual with this illness.

What should you do if you miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, take that dose only. Do not take any extra doses.

What are the side effects?
There are many side effects that can occur from taking this medication. They range from severe to less severe. The side effects that are less severe are gas, nausea, stomach problems, headache, diarrhea, insomnia, and constipation. The symptoms that might require immediate medication attention include: muscle pain, fever, or flu like symptoms, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fatigue, hives, pain during urination, and blurred vision.

How to store this medication?
This medication should be kept in the tight container that it comes in, and out of the reach of children. Store it at room temperature, and keep it away from excessive heat and moisture. This medication should not be stored in your bathroom as that will expose it to heat and moisture. You should never use any medication after its expiration date.

What does it look like?
Fluvastatin comes in capsule or extended-release tablet form. An individual will need to swallow the capsule or tablet whole. Do not crush, or chew either one of them. The doctor will usually start treatment with lower doses, and then it is increased according to the individuals need and response to the medication.

What if you overdose?
If you by chance take more than the recommended amount of this drug and overdose, contact poison control center immediately; along with your doctor.
