Aldesleukin / Proleukin Drug Information

What Is Aldesleukin / Proleukin?

Aldesleukin / Proleukin is generally given to patients only in the hospital, administered intravenously, or by injection, by a team of professionals and under the supervision of a physician. Aldesleukin / Proleukin is used primarily in the treatment of cancer of the kidneys and some forms of skin cancer that have spread to other parts of the body.

The dosage of this drug varies by patient, depending on variables like size and weight.  If you have any preexisting conditions such as history of seizures, mental problems, an infection, underactive thyroid, or kidney disease, inform your physician before treatment has been given if at all possible.  This drug should be taken only as prescribed, as some side effects of the drug can be fatal or life-threatening.

How To Use Aldesleukin / Proleukin

Prescription vials of aldesleukin may be prescribed to patients.  This drug will always be given by infusion and should not be taken with ibuprofen of any kind.  Prior to infusion, the drug should be brought to room temperature.  Usually each vial will contain a single dose.  Aldelsleukin should only be given as per the directions of the prescribing physician.

What Are The Possible Side Effects of Using Aldesleukin / Proleukin?

Some side effects of aldesleukin can be fatal.  Any side effects experienced should be reported to a physician as soon as possible, if not immediately.  A very common side effect, anemia has occurred in three of every four patients using this drug.  Anemia is a condition that results from low iron levels in the blood, and can usually be treated with medication and diet.  Other possible side effects of this drug include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Shortness of breath
  • Bloody urine
  • Painful urination
  • Bloody vomit

Anyone suffering extreme cases of these side effects should consult with a physician immediately.  While some of the above symptoms may occur, any severe exhibitions of possible side effects should be treated with all haste.  Some side effects of this drug can be fatal, so anyone suffering any serious or potentially dangerous symptoms should notify their physician.

Warnings and Precautions Before Taking Aldesleukin / Proleukin

Three-fourths of patients using aldesleukin will experience mental changes, including paranoia and hallucinations.  Anyone suffering extreme cases of mental changes should consult with a physician as soon as possible.  Those who have suffered from preexisting mental conditions may find this condition worsened by aldesleukin, and anyone with a history of mental problems should inform their physician prior to use.  Also, patients who suffer from seizures will find that this drug can worsen that condition.

Aldesleukin temporarily affects the white blood cell count, increasing the risk of infection. While being treated with this drug, exercise care not to get cut and do not put yourself at risk of injury or infection.  Aldesleukin is not recommended for pregnant women.  If you are pregnant or it is possible you may become pregnant, inform your physician before using this drug.

What Should You Do If You Miss a Dose of Aldesleukin / Proleukin?

If an injection time is missed, consult with a physician and otherwise continue to follow the normal schedule of injections.  By no means should you double up a dose of this medication, or administer more than the prescribed amount at any one time.  If a dose is skipped, inform your physician and carry on with the regular schedule as though no dose was missed.  Do not doublt dose.  Your physician will advise you further.

How To Store Aldesleukin / Proleukin

Aldesleukin, when prescribed, comes in the form of small vials.  These vials should be refrigerated between 36-46 F°.  Do not freeze aldesleukin.  The vial should be brought to room temperature before administered.  Keep this drug out of the reach of children and do not use in any other way but as prescribed by your physician.
