Enbrel
Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is etanercept. Enbrel is classified as a BRM (biological response modifier). Enbrel blocks tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) and is used for treating rheumatoid arthritis, juvonile rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spodolitis and psoriatic arthritis. TNF alpha is responsible for pain, tenderness and swelling in joints of arthritis patients. Enbrel is a synthetic protein, which reacts with TNF alpha and thus removes most of the TNF alpha molecules from joints and blood. Thus embrel is able to reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis of psoriasis and ankylosing spondylitis.
Precautions:
- Patients may develop infections while undergoing treatment with enbrel. All the patients should be monitored. If patients develop serious infections or sepsis, embrel should immediately be discontinued.
- If you are pregnant or plan to pregnant, you should inform your doctor before taking enbrel.
- If you are breast-feeding, you should inform your doctor before taking enbrel. If it is necessary to treat you with enbrel, you should stop breast-feeding.
- Persons suffering from diabetes should be given enbrel with caution and such patients should be continuously monitored for infection.
Warning:
- Pateints having active infections including chronic infections should not be treated with enbrel.
- Patients having a history of recurring infections should be prescribed enbrel with caution.
- Children should be immunized as recommended by the doctor before treating with enbrel.
- Enbrel is not recommended for persons suffering from the disease of central nervous system.
- Enbrel is not recommended for persons suffering from multiple sclerosis, myelitis or optic neuritis.
- If you develop symptoms, such as persistent fever, bruising, bleeding, or paleness, inform your doctor immediately.
Overdose :
- An overdose of Enbrel may cause symptoms of infection.
- You should seek immediate medical help, if you observe any of symptoms of infection.
Side Effects:
- The common side effects of enbrel are pain itching and redness at the site of itching, headache, fever, dizziness, throat and nasal irritation.
- The most common infection may occur i.e. upper respiratory infection, and other serious infections include bronchitis, septic arthritis, abdominal infection, pneumonia, ulcer, diarrhea, cellulites and sepsis.
- Some other side effects may also occur. In all such cases you should consult your doctor.
How to take:
- You should take the medicine only if prescribed by the doctor.
- The Enbrel is available in 25 mg powder vials. Enbrel is mixed with sterilized 1 ml water to form a clear homogeneous mixture. This freshly prepared liquid should be injected to the patients as early as possible.
How to store:
- Enbrel powder should be stored at 0 to 8 degree centigrade temperature preferable in a refrigerator.
- Freshly prepared solution should be used as early as possible, if necessary should be stored in a refrigerator at 3 to 8 degree centigrade for a maximum of six hours.
- Outdated powder or solution stored for than six hours should not be used.
