Humalog Insulin Drug Information: Side Effects

What Is Humalog?

Humalog is an insulin prescribed to patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Humalog is a very fast-acting blood glucose-lowering agent that is given to diabetic patients for use within their own homes.

How to Use Humalog

Humalog is administered via injection with a syringe. It is very important that you eat within fifteen minutes of taking a humalog injection. This very fast-acting glucose-lowering medication can result in low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if eating is delayed for any reason. Your physician will advise to eat fifteen minutes before or after a Humalog injection.

Follow the dosing and injection instructions provided by your physician and pharmacist very carefully when taking humalog.

What are The Possible Side Effects of Using Humalog?

Like all medications, there are some side effects associated with using Humalog. If any of these side effects become chronic or severe, you should consult with your physician. It is very important that you monitor yourself closely and take notice of any side effects you may be experiencing. The most common side effects associated with Humalog include:

  • Injection site becomes thickened, hardened, or even pitted

Some patients experience allergic reactions when taking Humalog. Consult with your physician and seek medical treatment immediately if you experience any of these side effects that signal allergic reaction:

  • Closing of the throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling in mouth or lips
  • Swelling of tongue
  • Swelling of face
  • Hives or other skin rash

As with any diabetes medication, and in fact with any diabetic patient, there is a risk of suffering from low or high blood sugar levels in your body. Taking Humalog as prescribed should help to prevent low and high blood sugar levels, but you should still be aware of the warning symptoms associated with these potentially dangerous medical conditions. You should also consult a physician or seek medical attention immediately if you experience hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar. The side effects of hyperglycemia include:

  • Extreme hunger and/or extreme thirst
  • Blurred vision
  • Weakness
  • Frequent urination

The following symptoms could signal that you are experiencing hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, and you should consume a food or drink that has sugar in it before calling your doctor immediately:

  • Dizziness and/or lightheadedness
  • Shakiness
  • Sweating
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Paleness of skin
  • Numb or tingling sensation in the mouth
  • Sudden hunger
  • Clumsy, jerky movements
  • Changes in mood or behavior, such as confusion, nervousness, and irritability
  • Seizures

What Should You Do If You Miss a Dose of Humalog?

Your physician will provide you with instructions regarding missed doses of humalog. Should you miss a dose, refer to these instructions and/or notify your physician immediately. Do not double dose and do not overdose this medication. If you think you have received too much or too little of your prescribed amount of Humalog, contact your physician as soon as possible.

How to Store Humalog

Store Humalog in the vials that the medication was given to you in, tightly closed and kept out of the reach of children. You will probably store your Humalog in a refrigerator or refrigerated environment. You should warm Humalog to room temperature prior to injection. If any vials of Humalog appear thick or discolored, discard these vials and do not inject them. Outdated or expired medications should be properly disposed of. You can consult with your doctor regarding proper disposal of vials of Humalog. Do not freeze this medication and do not expose Humalog to extreme temperatures of heat and cold.
