DextroStat:
Generic Name: DextroStat or dextroamphetamine (ALPHA-METHYL-PHENETHYL AMINE) sulphate is available in generally 5 mg or 10 mg tablets. The tablets have to be taken orally as prescribed by the physician.
Precautions
- For patients suffering with mild hypertension, the tablet should be prescribed carefully and all precautions should be taken before prescribing.
- The least dosage of the medicine should be prescribed or administered to minimize over dosage.
- The drug may cause some symptoms of weakness, so patients should be advised not to take potentially hazard physical exercises.
- The drug may contain some dyes, which may be allergenic to some allergic susceptible patients. So all the patients should be advised properly.
Warning:
Prescribing the drug for a long duration, may cause drug dependency, and therefore should be avoided for prolong duration.
Overdose:
- It has been observed that the response of DextroStat varies from person to person.
- In rats, the oral LD-50 of DextroStat is 97 mg.
- For a lower dosage up to 15 mg, toxic symptoms may occur occasionally.
- A 30 mg. dose can sometimes produce severe reactions.
- It has been observed that, sometimes even 400 – 500 mg dosages are not necessarily fatal.
- If a patient takes acute over dosage of DextroStat, he or she may suffer restlessness, tremor, rapid respiration, and confusion and sometimes-panic stats.
- Severe over dosage may cause depression and cardiovascular symptoms such as irregular heart beat, hypertension, circulatory collapse, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
- Convulsion and coma may lead to fatal poisoning.
How to take:
- Should be taken only if prescribed by a physician.
- The dosage should be adjusted as per requirement of particular patients.
- Late evening dosages should be avoided, as these may result in insomnia.
- It is not recommended for pediatric patients below 3 years of age.
Side Effects:
- Mothers dependent on DextroStat have an increased risk of premature delivery and infants born are also observed to have low birth weight.
- The infants may also experience symptoms of such as dysphoria, including agitation and significant lassitude.
- DextroStat are excreted in human milk. Mothers should therefore avoid nursing.
How to store:
Store the tablets in a safe place and out of reach of children.
