Hydrochlorothiazide and Triamterene: Side Effects

Hydrochlorothiazide with Triamterene is a combination of two diuretics, or water pills that increase the amount of urine produced by the body and is sold under the brand names Dyazide and Maxzide. Hydrochlorothiazide works by lowering the blood pressure and getting rid of extra salt in the body by increasing the amount of urine that the body produces. When this happens, the body may also lose potassium as a side effect. Triamterene compensates the loss of potassium.

The drug is useful in treating patients having a low potassium level and also those who run the risk of developing very low potassium levels by using Hydrochlorothiazide alone. The drug is also used in the treatment of high blood pressure, which can cause heart attacks, strokes and kidney problems. In addition the drug is useful in preventing swelling and fluid retention that could be caused by kidney and liver problems. It can be used for easing breathing difficulty also.

How to use Hydrochlorothiazide/Triamterene

The medicine is taken orally with or without food. The dosage prescribed by the doctor should be strictly followed. Usually the drug is taken once in a day. It is best to take it early in the morning as it causes frequent urination and could disturb your sleep if taken late in the day. You should avoid taking it before bedtime.

For best results you should take this medicine at the same time every day. Do not discontinue the medicine without your doctor’s advice, even if you feel well.

Dosage

Take the drug as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember or as soon as you are in a position to take it. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose altogether. Never take two doses at a time.

Storage

Store in a dry place at room temperature away from direct heat and sunlight. Keep the drug out of reach of children.

Overdose

An overdose of the drug can result in severe weakness, fainting, shallow breathing, and severely decreased urination. Take emergency help if you suspect an overdose.

Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, light-headedness, weakness, and dryness in the mouth are some of the common side effects. You can reduce the effects of some of these side effects by taking some remedial steps like frequent and small meals for preventing nausea, and use of candy or chewing gum to reduce the dryness in the mouth. Your skin may become more sensitive and you may have a tendency to get sunburned more easily if you are taking this drug.

Precautions

Since this drug can make you feel dizzy and less alert, you should avoid any activity that requires concentration, such as driving and skilled or hazardous work.

Inform your doctor of any other medicines that you are taking. In particular take care to see that you are not taking any other medicine that increases the potassium level in your body. Very high levels of potassium can be dangerous, and even fatal in extreme cases.

Avoid drugs (prescribed or OTC) that can increase your blood pressure.

You should also avoid taking these drugs if you are pregnant or planning to becoming pregnant shortly, or if you are breast-feeding.

Inform your doctor of any allergies that you may have and the effect (such as rashes, coughing, wheezing or swelling) that it had on you.

Follow the diet and exercise instructions given by your doctor. These are likely to include low salt diets.

Check your blood pressure regularly, and also your sugar levels if you are diabetic.
