Fentanyl:
Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is fentanyl. It belongs to the class of medicine known as narcotic analgesics. Fentanyl topical patches are used for relieving moderate to severe pain that cannot be controlled by ordinary or less potent pain relievers, especially pain associated with cancer.
Fentanyl topical patches can also be used for other purposes.
Precaution:
- Fentanyl should be used only if prescribed by doctor.
- If you had or have liver, kidney or heart disease, asthma, lung disease, diarrhea or intestinal disease, you should inform your doctor.
- If you have or had epilepsy or gall bladder disease or Addison’s disease, consult your doctor before using fentanyl.
- If you are allergic to fentanyl, you should not use the medicine.
- If you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, you should consult your doctor as fentanyl is a FDA pregnancy class C medicine and the affect of fentanyl on unborn child is not known, however fentanyl may cause addiction to unborn child.
- Fentanyl should not be used for relieving pain from surgery.
- If two drugs are taken together, they may interact with each other. If you are taking any prescribed or non-prescribed, food supplements or herbal medicine including antidepressants, anxiety medicines and sedatives, you should inform your doctor before using fentanyl.
- Children below 12 years of age should not be prescribed fentanyl.
- Old age people may experience more side effects and should be monitored regularly.
- Fentanyl, being a habit-forming medicine should be used under close supervision of your doctor.
Warning:
- Fentanyl is habit-forming and should be used as directed by the doctor.
- If you are on fentanyl, you should avoid driving and operation of heavy machineries, as the medicine may cause dizziness.
- You should avoid alcohol.
- You should also avoid the use of sedatives, tranquilizers and sleeping pills.
- If you are a nursing mother prescribed with fentanyl, you should avoid breast-feeding, as fentanyl may cause addiction and withdrawl symptoms in infants.
Overdose:
- The symptoms of overdose of fentanyl may include dizziness,weakness, confusion, coma,tiredness,slow breathing and seizures.
- If you suspect overdose symptoms of fentanyl, you should seek immediate medical help.
Side Effects:
- The common side effects of fentanyl may include constipation, blurred vision, flushing, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, sweating, headache, urination, itching, dry mouth and vomiting.
- The more serious side effects include an allergic reaction, seizures, cold, slow or fast heart rate, rash, clammy skin, confusion and nervousness.
- Some other side effects may also be observed. If you observe any of the symptoms as mentioned or any other symptom, you should talk to your doctor immediately.
How to take:
- Use fentanyl topical patches only if prescribed by the doctor.
- Fentanyl topical patches should be used in prescribed manner only.
- Apply the patch to a flat, clean and dry area on chest, backside or upper arm.
- Remove the patch after 72 hours and destroy it. If another patch is prescribed, apply it at different site.
- Do not use more than the recommended patches at a time.
- Do not stop using fentanyl without consulting your doctor, as the medicine may cause withdrawal symptoms.
How to store:
- The fentanyl topical patches should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children
- The fentanyl topical patches should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated patches should not be used.
