Fluox:
Generic Name: The generic name of the fluox is fluoxtine. Fluox belongs to the class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reputake inhibitors (SSRIs). In human brain nerves interact or communicate with each other through neurotransmitters. For an effective communication between two nerves, the neurotransmitter released by one nerve should attach to the receptor of another nerve. Sometimes the neurotranmitter releases by one nerve is attached to the receptor of same nerve. This is known as reputake. Fluox prevents the reuptake of serotonin neurotransmitter and thus increases the level of serotonin.
Fluox is used for treating depression and other emotional orders. The symptoms of depression include feeling of guiltness,fatigue,difficulty in concentration, irregular sleep habits and suicidal thoughts. Fluox is also used for treating obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD) and for relieving symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorders (PMDD).
Fluox can also be used for other diseases and is available in 20 mg tablets and 20 mg capsules.
Precaution:
- If you are taking MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitor, you should not take fluox and atleast a 14 days gap should be maintained while shifting from MAO to fluox.
- If you are allergic to fluox or any other antidepressant, you should not take this medicine.
- If you are allergic to any other medicine including preservative and dyes, inform your doctor.
- The doses of fluox should be gradually increased to avoid overdose and sometimes a period of up to one month is required to see the full effect of the medicine.
- If you have history kidney problem, liver problem or epilepsy, discuss with your doctor before taking the medicine.
- If you have a problem heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes, inform your doctor.
- If you or your family member has a history of bipolar disorder, you should consult your doctor.
- If two drugs are taken together, they may interact with each other. If you are taking any prescribed or non-prescribed, food supplements or herbal medicine, you should inform your doctor before taking fluox.
- If you have a plan to go for surgery including dental surgery, inform your surgeon that you are on fluox.
- If you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, you should inform your doctor before taking fluox.
Warning:
- Take fluox only if prescribed by the doctor.
- If you are a nursing mother, avoid breast-feeding or consult your doctor, as fluox is excreted in breast-milk.
- If you are taking fluox,you should avoid alcohol, as alcohol may increase dizziness.
- You ashould not drive or operate heavy machineries after taking fluox.
- Children below 18 years of age, if prescribed with fluox may develop suicidal thought especially in the starting days.
- Do not take any non-prescribed medicine without consulting your doctor.

Overdose:
- You should not use double dose of fluox at a time.
- The symptoms of overdose may vary from person to person.
- The symptoms of overdose may include convulsions, irregular heartbeat, disturbed concentration, dizziness, constipation and coma.
- If you observe any of the symptoms or any other symptoms, you should contact to your doctor immediately.
Side Effects:
- The common side effects include nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, mood change, sweating, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite, insomnia, weight loss, urine infection, tremor, weakness, vomiting, difficulty in breathing, slow heart rate, irregular blood pressure and convulsions.
- Less common side effects of fluox include skin rashes, muscle problem, asthma, dizziness while rising from bed, low blood sugar, migraine, decreased sex drive, abnormality in menstrual period, chest pain, urinary problem and muscle spasms.
- Some other side effects may also be observed. If you observe any of the symptoms as mentioned or any other symptom, you should talk to your doctor immediately.
How to take:
- Take fluox only if prescribed by the doctor.
- Take the medicine with a full glass of water in the morning or morning and evening or as directed by the doctor.
- The medicine can be taken with or without food.
- Swallow the medicine as whole. Don’t cut or chew the medicine.
- If you have missed a dose, take as soon as you remember. If it is the time of your next dose, take a single dose. Do not take double dose.
How to store:
- The medicine should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children
- The fluox should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should be destroyed.
