Escitalopram:
Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is escitalopram and used for treating depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This class of drugs is also known as Selective Serotonin Reputake Inhibitors (SSRIs).
In human brain nerves interact or communicate with each other through neurotransmitters. For an effective communication between two nerves, the neurotransmitters released by one nerve should attach to the receptor of another nerve. Some times the neurotransmitter released by one nerve is attached to the receptor of the same nerve. This is known as reputake.
Escitalopram prevents the reputake of neurotransmitter serotonin and thus increases the level of serotonin.
Escitalopram is available in 5 to 20 mg tablets and should be taken only if prescribed by your doctor.
Precautions:
- If you are allergic to escitalopram, or any other medicine of this class, you should not take escitalopram.
- If you are taking MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitor, you should not take escitalopram. At least a 14 days gap should be maintained between MAO and escitalopram or vice versa.
- If you have or had in past liver or kidney problem, seizures or fits or suicidal thoughts, discuss with your doctor before taking escitalopram.
- Children below 18 years of age , if prescribed escitalopram should be observed continuously. They may develop suicidal thoughts or their behavior may change suddenly. If you observe any change in behavior, you should consult your doctor immediately.
- Escitalopram when taken with certain other drugs may change the effect of the medicine. If you are taking any other drug whether prescribed or non-prescribed, you should consult your doctor before taking escitalopram.
- If you are pregnant or plan to pregnant, you should consult your doctor.
- If you are a nursing woman taking escitalopram, you should avoid breast-feeding.
Warning:
- In the starting phase of the medicine, you may feel the worsening symptoms of depression. You should not discontinue the medicine without consulting your doctor.
- You may develop suicidal thought or change in behavior.
- Your doctor for any sudden behavioral changes should continuously monitor you.
- Children below 18 years of age, if prescribed with escitalopram should be monitored continuously, as they may develop suicidal thoughts.
- Escitalopram may cause dizziness, so avoid driving and operation of heavy machineries after taking the medicine
- Avoid intake of alcohol, if you are on escitalopram.
- Take escitalopram as directed by the doctor. Do not stop escitalopram even if you are feeling better without consulting your doctor.
Overdose:
- An overdose of escitalopram may cause the symptoms like dizziness, nausea, weakness, headache, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, tremor, fever and unconsciousness.
- Rare cases of an overdose may also cause confusion, irregular heartbeat, problem in breathing, coma and memory problem.
- You should seek immediate medical help, if you observe any of these symptoms.
Side Effects:
- The more severe side effects of escitalopram may include allergic reactions (swelling of face, lip, throat and difficulty in respiration). If you observe these allergic reactions you should contact immediately to your doctor.
- More common side effects include dizziness, constipation, dry mouth, diarrhea, insomnia, impotence, sleepiness and sweating.
- The rare side effects include blurred vision, anxiety, headache, nervousness, difficult having an orgasm, chest and abdominal pain, fever, heartburn, joint pain, fever and skin rash, menstrual cramp, high blood pressure, consciousness, palpitations, confusion, urine disorder, severe dizziness If you observe any of these side effects, you should consult your doctor immediately.
- Some other side effects may also occur. In all such cases you should consult your doctor.
How to take:
- You should take the medicine in appropriate doses only if prescribed by the doctor.
- The escitalopram can be taken with or without food. The tablet should be taken with full glass of water. The liquid form of escitalopram should be measured by a measuring spoon. Try to take the medicine at the same time daily.
- If you missed a dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. If it is time to take next dose, take only a single dose. You should not take double dose.
- You should not stop escitalopram, with out consulting your doctor.
How to store:
- Escitalopram should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
- Medicine should be kept out of excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used.
