What is Bicalutamide?
Bicalutamide is a hormonal therapy that is used to treat prostate cancer. There are different types of therapies Bicalutamide may not work for everyone so if you are taking it and you feel it is not working for you be sure to talk to your doctor about it he can tell you what other treatments might work for you.
How to take this medication
Bicalutamide is a tablet that is taken once a day and it comes in 2 different strengths which are 50mg and 150mg. Be sure to swallow it whole with plenty of water do not crush it or chew it . If you have trouble swallowing pills be sure to talk to your doctor to see if this drug is available in liquid form. This is also for people who are on a feeding tube. Take this medication with food if it makes your stomach upset. If you miss a dose and remember to take it within in an hour then be sure to take it if not skip it and go back to your regular schedule.
When to be careful when taking Bicalutamide
Do not take this medication if you are pregnant or might become pregnant because it could have risks for the unborn child. Also talk to your doctor if you are breast feeding for it may be harmful to the child. Your doctor will let you know if it is safe to breast feed or not. Also be sure to tell your doctor if you have painful urination, unable to urinate or having to go to frequently. Also this medication sometimes causes seizures in some people so if you do not have a history do seizures and start to get them be sure to tell your doctor right away.
Side effects of Bicalutamide
Some side effects of this medication could include any of the following ….
Anxiety
Depression
Loss of sex drive
Leg cramps
Reduced sperm counts in men
Anorexia
If these symptoms become a problem talk to your doctor to see what can be done about them.
Overdose
If you think you or someone else has taken an overdose go to the hospital right away call poison control and seek immediate medical attention. This medication could have a serious side effect if taken an over dose which would also include death.
How to store this medication
Keep this medication away from light and in a cool dry place after it has been opened.
