Generic Name: Benzoyl peroxide
What is Benzoyl peroxide? This drug belongs to the group of medicines known as topical antibacterials. It is used to treat mild to moderate acne. It helps to remove bacteria, which are the cause of the irritation and inflammation of acne. As well as its antibacterial effects, this medicine can dry out the skin and encourage it to shed the surface layer of dead skin. Together, these effects make it harder for pores of the skin to become blocked and for infection to develop. Benzoyl Peroxide is available in gel, wash and cream form. Benzoyl Peroxide also comes combined with an antibiotic to make it more effective; products in this category are Duac, Benzamycin, Quinoderm. However, no home treatments for acne will work immediately. It may take up to several weeks, if not months, for significant effects to be noticeable. If your skin problem has not improved within 4 to 6 weeks, try an alternative or consult your physician.
