Bupropion

Intro

More commonly known as Zyban, this drug is known being used by those wishing to kick the habit of smoking. It was also the first non-nicotine aid passed by the FDA for those wishing to quit.  However, it is important to mention that it is also prescribed as an antidepressant to some in the form of a drug called Wellbutrin. It is believed that those who smoke suffer from a biochemical need for nicotine and Bupropian is thought to alter the bodies’ mood transmitters that are associated with the addiction.  It is also believed that since this drug acts as an antidepressant it also helps alleviate this symptom that many who quit smoking suffer from.  Another plus to this medication is that since it is non-nicotine a person wishing to quit can taper off gradually and not suffer the side effects of quitting cold turkey.  This first step is to speak with your physician to see if this may be a treatment option for you.

Precautions

It is important that one taking this medication follow his/her doctors’ instructions carefully.  Each dose should be taken at regular intervals to gain the recommended effect of the drug.  As with any drug, you should never take more than the prescribed dosage and do not stop taking this drug without first consulting with your physician.

If you have a history of certain illnesses such as head injuries, brain tumors, heart, liver, or kidney disease, diabetes, or a history of alcoholism consult with your doctor prior to taking this drug to discuss the possible side effects as they relate to your condition.

Due to some instances of insomnia one should not take this medication close to bedtime.  Because this drug may slow your responses and cause dizziness you should not drive or operate heavy machinery until you have gotten use to the medication.

If you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant advise your physician.  Nursing mothers should not use this drug as it can be passed from mother to infant and is considered harmful to infants.

Method of Dosage

Bupropion is prescribed in pill form only and should be taken an average of seven to twelve weeks.  Upon taking this medication if stomach upset should occur it is recommended that it be taken with food.

If you miss a does you should take it immediately unless it is within four hours of your next dose.  In this case you should skip the missed dose and continue on with your scheduled doses.  Never take more than the prescribed dose or double up on this medication as it will increase your risk of a more serious side effect.

If you suspect an overdose contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.  Some symptoms of overdose are seizures, hallucinations, rapid heart rate, and loss of consciousness.

Who Shouldn’t Take

This drug should not be taken by anyone suffering from or having a history of eating disorders including anorexia nervosa and bulimia.  Certain other medical conditions may apply and should be discussed with your health care provider.

Side Effects

The most common side effects with this medication are dry mouth, headache, blurred vision, increased sweating, mild  nausea and or vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, fatigue, and  insomnia. If these symptoms persist you should speak to your doctor.   In cases where you experience severe weight loss or gain or with insomnia talk to your doctor immediately.

More severe side effects include tremors, palpitations, decreased sex drive, slowed movements, severe anxiety, difficulty urinating, and there have been some cases of an allergic reaction being reported.  If you experience any of these side effects seek immediate medical attention.

However, in rare cases there have been reported side of effects of seizures and in clinical testing results are contraindicated in people with a history of seizures.  It is believed that this drug can lower a persons seizure threshold and as such any history of seizures should be reported to your doctor prior to beginning treatment on this drug.  Also, there have been rarely found cases of mental problems, fevers, yellowing of eyes and skin (known as jaundice), and severe muscle aches reported.
