Fosfomycin:
Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is fosfomycin tromethamine. Fosfomycin is an antibiotic and used fot treating urinary tract infection (UTI) and cystitis (bladder infection) in women.
The medicine should be taken only if prescribed by the doctor. Fosfomycin is available in powder form, which has to be dissolved in water, and has to be taken orally.
Precautions:
- If you are allergic to fosfomycin, food, preservative or dyes, you should inform your doctor.
- If you have kidney disease, the effect of fosfomycin may be increased. In such case you should consult to your doctor before taking fosfomycin.
- The effect of fosfomycin on unborn baby is not known. If you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
- If you are taking medicine for digestive systems, you should inform your doctor.
- Fosfomycin when taken with certain other drugs may change the effect of the medicine. If you are taking any other drug whether prescribed, non-prescribed, food supplements or herbal medicine, you should inform your doctor before taking fosfomycin.
Warning:
- If you are a nursing woman taking fosfomycin, you should avoid breast-feeding or consult your doctor.
- If your symptoms remain same for 2 to 3 days, you should contact your doctor.
- You should not take any additional dose of fosfomycin, as it will not improve your symptoms.
Overdose:
- The symptoms of overdose of fosmomycin are not known.
- You should seek immediate medical help, if you suspect an overdose of fosfomycin.
Side Effects:
- The side effects of the medicine may vary from person to person.
- More common side effects of fosfomycin may include diarrhea, constipation, nausea, headache and vaginal discharge.
- Some less common side effects may include dizziness, painful menstruation, allergic reaction, sore throat, weakness, chest pain and heartburn.
- Some other side effects may also occur. In all such cases you should consult your doctor.
How to take:
- You should take the medicine only if prescribed by the doctor.
- Fosfomycin sachet contains powder. Open the sachet and pour the powder in a glass of cold water. Dissolve the powder take the medicine.
- Do not use hot water or any other beverage.
- Do not store the dissolved medicine.
How to store:
- Fosfomycin should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
- Medicine should be kept out of excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used.
