What is Benztropine Mesylate?This medication is used as an adjunct in the therapy of all forms of Parkinsonism. It belongs to a group called antidyskinetics, which are helpful in treating Parkinson’s disease. This medicine is also useful in treating tremors caused as side effects when using neuroleptic drugs (for instance, phenothiazines).
How to take Benztropine Mesylate?
What are the possible side effects of Benztropine Mesylate? Vomiting can be caused, which may be controlled by temporary discontinuation, followed by resumption at a lower dosage. Slight reduction in dosage may control nausea and still give sufficient relief of symptoms.
Normally, these side effects are not serious. However, tell your doctor if these symptoms bother you or do not go away. Also, rarely, disorders of the nervous system such as confusion, disorientation, memory impairment, visual hallucinations may occur; exacerbation of pre-existing psychotic symptoms, nervousness, depression, listlessness, numbness of fingers may also happen.
What to do if you accidentally take an overdose of Benztropine Mesylate?
Symptoms of overdosage may be any of those seen in atropine poisoning or antihistamine overdosage: CNS depression, preceded or followed by stimulation; confusion; nervousness; listlessness; hallucinations (especially visual); dizziness; muscle weakness; blurred vision; palpitations; tachycardia; elevated blood pressure; nausea; vomiting; dysuria; numbness of fingers; hot, dry, flushed skin; delirium; coma; shock; convulsions; respiratory arrest; anhidrosis; hyperthermia; constipation. Physostigmine salicylate, 1 to 2 mg, SC or IV, reportedly will reverse symptoms of anticholinergic intoxication. Contact your doctor immediately in the event of a significant overdosage. |
