What is Adenosine / Deoxyadenine?
Adenosine / Deoxyadenine dilates the coronary arteries, slowing the rhythm of the heart. It also has a sedating effect on the central nervous system, decreasing neurotransmitter release and having an anticonvulsive effect. In the bronchi, it causes bronchoconstriction. It has a negative inotropic effect on the heart.
Adenosine / Deoxyadenine is used as an antiarrhythmic in the treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular trachycardia.
How To Use Adenosine / Deoxyadenine
Often used as an adjunct to thallium-201, adenosine / deoxyadenine is only given as an IV push. Given intravenously in a specialized unit, there is no drug on the market available for prescription to patients. This drug is given only under the supervision of trained professionals and a physician, under electrocardiographic control.
What Are The Possible Side Effects of Using Adenosine / Deoxyadenine?
Side effects of adenosine / deoxyadenine are generally mild and last less than one minute. If any of these symptoms persist or cause excessive discomfort, inform a nurse or physician immediately:
- Lightheadedness
- Flushing of the face
- Nausea
- Diaphoresis
If a patient experiences any one or all of these symptons, they should be very short-lived. Anyone experiencing prolonged or extreme symptoms should notify medical staff immediately.
Warnings and Precautions Before Taking Adenosine / Deoxyadenine
Any preexisting medical condition should be reported immediately to medical personnel if they are not already informed of your medical history. If you are pregnant or possibly pregnant, inform medical staff immediately.
What Should You Do If You Miss a Dose of Adenosine / Deoxyadenine
As adenosine / deoxyadenine will only be administered in a monitored clinical environment by trained professionals, it is unlikely you will not received the prescribed amount. If you feel there is any problem with your medication, you should consult with your physician as soon as possible.
