Doxepin:
Generic Name:
Doxepin or doxepin hydrochloride drugs are available in generally 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg, 100 mg, and 150 mg capsules and syrup. This medicine belongs to the family of drugs known as tricyclic antidepressants. This drug should be taken only if prescribed by a physician.
Precautions:
- If you are on prescription for high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, oral contraceptive, sedative tranquilizers, thyroid medication and vitamins. You should intimate your physician before taking doxepin.
- If you are pregnant, plan to pregnant or are breast feeding, avoid the intake of doxepin and inform your physician.
- If anyone in your family has a history of depression, bipolar disorder or mania, take all precautions before taking doxepin and consult your doctor.
- If you are on doxepin, tell your doctor before any type of surgery including dental surgery, you may have to go.
- You should avoid cigarette smoking, as smoking may decrease the effectiveness of this drug.
Warning:
- It has been observed that children and teenagers taking doxepin are more likely to think about harming or killing himself or herself or plan to do so.
- Children below the age of 18 years are not advised to take doxepin, if prescribed by physician, their behavior should be observed continuously as they may develop serious symptoms at any time.
- If a child is on doxepin, he should be taken to doctor regularly for examination.
Overdose:
- In children the overdose of doxepin may lead to symptoms of irregular behavior towards themselves.
- The overdose may also cause symptoms of agitation, disturbed concentration, confusion, high or low body temperatures and vomiting.
- The symptoms of over dosage may also include irregular heart beat, severely low blood pressure, coma and convulsions
- Sometimes the overdose of doxepin can be fatal.
How to take:
- Doxepin should be taken only if prescribed by a doctor.
- Take the exact dosage. May be taken with or without food.
- The doxepin should be continuously taken, even if you feel well. In no case, you should stop taking doxepin, without consulting your doctor, especially if you are on doxepin for a long time.
Side Effects:
- The common side effects of doxepin are weakness or tiredness, drowsiness, anxiety, insomnia and dry mouth.
- In some cases the side effects may be more severe such as difficulty in urination, frequent urination, excessive sweating, blurred vision and constipation. In such cases you must consult your doctor.
- The extreme severe side effects includes fever, difficulty in speech and breathing, rash on skin, yellowness in eyes, irregular heart beat and muscle spasm. If anyone of these cases is observed in the patient, you must call doctor immediately.
How to store:
- The drugs should be stored in a safe place and out of reach of children.
- Outdated medicines should be thrown out.
