Why and for what would I take this drug?

This drug is most commonly used to treat congestion of the chest and lungs.  Common among cold and flu sufferers, congestion causing difficulty in breathing and often times leads to severe cough.  During this time the body has difficulty expelling the pent up mucus.  This drug works to thin the mucus so the body can then expel it without severe damage or overworking the already tired body.

Once the drug begins to interact with the mucus, the congestion begins to be relieved by way of drainage.  This aids in the breathing of the patient who feels less restricted with the thinning process taking place.  This drug is often times prescribed to those who already have a condition that prohibits proper breathing because of the fast acting nature.

How should I take this drug?

As with all prescription drugs, you should always take this medication as prescribed by your doctor.  This drug comes in aerosol form and is for inhalation only.  This allows the chemical composition of the drug to reach the bronchial trees faster and thereby begin working a lot faster than normal liquid or pill for medications of the type.

It is recommended that you do not take this medication in combination with any other aerosol inhalation treatment.  The chemical components may interact in an adverse manner and create risky side effects.  Be sure to inform the prescribing doctor if you are currently taking any aerosol medication that could cause this interaction.

Should I be concerned about interactions with other medications that I am taking?

As with any drug, there is always the possibility of a dangerous interaction with other medications that have not yet been determined to be harmful  This is why it is so important that you tell your doctor about all of the medications that you are currently taking and how much the dosage is.  Only a doctor is qualified to make a judgment on the possible interaction of this drug with others like it.

This is the list of drugs that are known to cause dangerous interactions, inform your doctor if you take any of the following medications for any reason: Do not mix with tetracycline, chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, erythromycin lactobionate, amphotericin B, ampicillin sodium, iodized oil, chymotrypsin, trypsin, or hydrogen peroxide.
Are there any side effects I should I know about with this drug?
Though they do not appear in all cases, there are some side effects that are commonly known to occur and they may disappear during the course of the treatment.  If they become severe or bothersome, talk to your doctor as he/she may need to adjust the dosage.

  • Hypertension (Increased blood pressure) is common with this drug and may become severe if not regulated.  Be sure to have your blood pressure tested regularly while taking part in this treatment.
  • This medication can cause drowsiness.  It is recommended that you do not operate any heavy machinery or drive until you know how the drug is going to affect you.  All drugs effect people in different ways and you cannot assume that you will be find.
  • Some patients have reported ear pain that is sometimes severe.  This is a sign of improper dosage and can usually be relieved with a dosage correction by your doctor.  Never adjust the dosage yourself without first talking with your doctor.
  • Stomach problems, such as vomiting sometimes occur.  This is something that has appeared in less than one percent of all patients and may point to a reaction with one of the many chemical components of the drug.
  • In some cases you may experience a fever.  If the fever becomes high, then you should immediately contact your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I accidentally overdose on this medication?
If you overdose then you should treat this as any poisoning and contact the local poison control center for assistance.  If that is not possible then you should proceed to the nearest hospital emergency room and be sure to take the medication with you so they can properly diagnose and treat the poisoning.
