Clomipramine / Anafranil Drug Information

 

What is Clomipramine / Anafranil?

Clomipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant. Clomipramine is prescribed by physicians in the treatment of panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder, and narcolepsy in addition to its antidepressant effects. Clomipramine should only be taken as prescribed by a physician.

How To Use Clomipramine / Anafranil

Patients will generally start out taking smaller doses of clomipramine that will slowly be increased.  Most physicians will prescribe 25mg per dose, to be taken two or three times daily.  Once increased in dosage, clomipramine dosage will usually be around 100-225 mg per day. Clomipramine is taken orally, and some patients may experience nausea as a result of taking this medication. Clomipramine may be taken with food to decrease feelings of nausea.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Taking Clomipramine / Anafranil?

There are some side effects associated with taking clomipramine.  Extreme, prolonged, or excessive cases of these symptoms should be reported to your physician.

  1. Headaches

In most cases, patients suffering headaches while taking clomipramine can treat
Headaches with over-the-counter medications, but consult with your physician before taking any other medications while taking clomipramine.

  1. Fatigue

While some symptoms of fatigue are common while taking clomipramine, continuous or excessive fatigue should be reported to your physician.

  1. Confusion

Some patients may experience feelings of confusion while taking clomipramine.  If this symptom persists, or causes periods of memory loss or extreme disorientation, consult with your physician as he may want to discontinue use of this drug.

  1. Lightheadedness

Feelings of lightheadedness or dizziness may occur while taking clomipramine.  Those experiencing frequent or extreme bouts of lightheadedness should inform a physician as soon as possible.

  1. Anxiety

Nervous conditions and feelings may result as a side effect of clomipramine, and feelings of anxiety have been observed in some patients taking this drug.  Your doctor can advise you on possible methods of treatment for this side effect.

  1. Insomnia

Patients may experience sleep disorders like insomnia while taking clomipramine.  Frequent and persistent insomnia should be reported to a physician, who may want to prescribe certain sleep aids to combat this side effect.

  1. Nightmares
  2. Sweating
  3. Constipation

Irregular bowels and constipation have been observed in some patients taking clomipramine.  Your physician may want you to take over the counter or prescribed medications to help alleviate this side effect, but do not take anything for constipation without consulting with a physician first.

  1. Difficult urination

Difficult or painful urination may be experienced by those taking clomipramine.  Your physician can prescribe additional medication to reduce the pain of this side effect.

  1. Heartburn

Most patients suffering heartburn while taking clomipramine find that treatment for this side effect is often simple and inexpensive, but consult with your physician before taking anything to treat this side effect.

  1. Weight gain

Some weight gain may be observed by patients taking clomipramine.  Inform your physician in experiencing inexplicable weight gain.  Some change in diet and exercise routine may be needed.

  1. Teeth-grinding in sleep

 

Warnings and Precautions Before Taking Clomipramine / Anafranil

Clomipramine can cause certain sexual problems in men, such as impotency.  Consult with your physician if experiencing these symptoms.  Another medication may be prescribed to treat these sexual side effects.  Patients taking clomipramine may experience sensitivity to the sun, finding that they sunburn more easily.  Prolonged exposure to the sun should be avoided, and sunscreen worn, when taking this medication. 

In some cases, clomipramine can cause the beginning stages of glaucoma that could lead to eventual blindness.  If any symptoms of glaucoma or eye trouble have occurred, inform your physician immediately.  Patients who suffer from any type of heart condition should inform their physician before taking clomipramine.

What Should You Do If You Miss a Dose of Clomipramine / Anafranil?

Clomipramine should only be taken as prescribed.  If a dose is missed, do not double dose this medication.  Take the skipped dose as soon as possible, but do not double up if another dose is already due to be taken.  Take this medication only as indicated, never taking more than the prescribed amount at one time.

How To Store Clomipramine / Anafranil

Do not store clomipramine at temperatures above 86º F.  Keep this medication away from moisture and out of the reach of children. Clomipramine should not be exposed to extreme temperatures or conditions, like ice and flame.
