How To Use Glimepiride

Glimepiride should only be used as prescribed by a physician. This medication comes in tablet form and is taken orally by mouth. Usually, this drug is prescribed on a once-daily basis, and should be taken in the morning with a large meal. What Are The Possible Side Effects of Using Glimepiride?

Like all medications, there are some side effects associated with using Glimepiride. If any of these side effects become chronic or sever, you should consult with your physician. It is very important that you monitor yourself closely and take notice of any side effects you may be experiencing. The most common side effects associated with glimepiride include:

  • Dark urine
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting and nausea

Some patients have experienced potentially severe side effects while using glimepiride. It is important that you consult your physician if the following symptoms persist or becoming increasingly severe:

  • Muscle cramps
  • Skin rash
  • Excess bruising or bleeding
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swelling
  • Rapid weight gain
  • Chest pain
  • Changes in mood such as irritability, restlessness, or unusual weakness.

You should call a physician or seek treatment immediately if you experience one or more of the following side effects that could signal an allergic reaction:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Hives
  • Swelling of the face, mouth, or throat

You should also consult a physician or seek medical attention immediately if you experience hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar. The side effects of hyperglycemia include:

  • Extreme hunger and/or extreme thirst

  • Frequent urination

The following symptoms could signal that you are experiencing hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, and you should consume a food or drink that has sugar in it before calling your doctor immediately:            

  • Dizziness and/or lightheadedness
  • Shakiness
  • Sweating
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Paleness of skin
  • Numb or tingling sensation in the mouth
  • Sudden hunger
  • Clumsy, jerky movements
  • Changes in mood or behavior, such as confusion, nervousness, and irritability
  • Seizures

What Should You Do If You Miss a Dose of Glimepiride?

If you should happen to accidentally skip or miss a dose of glimepiride, take your scheduled dose right away unless it is almost time for your next dose. You do not want to take a double dose of this medication.

How To Store Glimepiride

You should keep your glimepiride in the container it is given to you in, and make sure it remains tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Glimepiride is stored at room temperature, and should not be exposed to extreme temperature changes or excess heat and moisture. Do not store glimepiride in the bathroom.
