What is Abciximab Injection?

            Abciximah is used to prevent the blood from clotting during a heart attack, episodes of chest pain or during a procedure that is being used to treat a blocked coronary artery. There is currently no generic equivalent available.
What information does the health care professional need to know before administering abciximab?
            The health care provider needs to know the following before you are given abciximab:

  • Are you taking a blood thinner such a Coumadin or medications that may affect platelets such as aspirin, tichopidine, or clopidogrel?
  • The existence of any bleeding disorders or blood problems
  • Do you have or have you ever had a brain tumor or aneurysm?
  • Hypertension
  • Do you have stomach ulcers?
  • Have you had a recent injury or surgery?
  • Have you had a stroke?
  • Do you weight under 165 pounds?
  • Have you had an unusual or allergic reaction to Abciximab, mouse or human proteins, or any other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives?
  • Are you pregnant or trying to become pregnant?
  • Are you nursing?

How is this medication used?
        Abciximab is given either by injection or intravenously by a health care professional. This is performed either in a hospital or clinical setting. It is usually given ten to sixty minutes before the procedure is performed and followed by a continuous infusion for up to twelve hours.
What drugs may interact with Abciximab?
        There are a number of drugs that may interact negatively with Abciximab including the following:

  • Anagrelide
  • Any agent that is used to treat or prevent blood clots
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs such a ibuprofen
  • Aspirin
  • Cilostazol
  • Clopidogrel
  • Dipyridamole
  • Any herbal products that contain feverfew, garlic, ginger, ginkgo, or horse chestnut
  • Ticlopidine

        It’s important that your health care provider know about all medications that you are taking, both prescription and non-prescription. The health care professional also needs to know if you are a frequent user of drinks containing caffeine or alcohol, if you are a smoker, and if you are a user of illegal drugs. Any of these may affect the way your medication works, but check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any medication whether prescription or over the counter.
What are the side effects from receiving abciximab?
        The following includes some side effects that should be reported to your health care professional as soon as possible:

  • Any signs of bleeding including bruising, black, tarry stools, blood in the urine, red pinpoint spots on the skin, etc.
  • Backache
  • Coughing up blood
  • Pains in the chest
  • Breathi
  • ng difficulty
  • Dizziness or fainting

        Additionally, there are some other side effects that you might experience that aren’t quite so serious and do not require medical attention. However, if these continue or become bothersome, they should be reported to your health care professional. Some of these include headache, nausea, pain at the injection site, and stomachache.
