Famvir
Generic Name : The generic name of the medicine is famciclovir and it is an antiviral drug. Although famvir does not cure but relieves the symptoms of shingles or genital herpes infection, it helps in heeling of blisters fasters and thus relieves pain and discomfort in short duration. In human body famvir converts to penciclovir , which is active against virus and slows down the growth of herpes virus. It is also used to treat to cold sores (HIV patients) and chicken pox.
Famvir can also be used for other purposes.
Precautions:
- If you are allergic to famvir or penciclovir, you should not take famvir.
- If you have or had in past kidney problem, discuss with your doctor before taking famvir.
- If you are taking probenecid, you may need the dosage adjustment of famvir and your doctor should also continuously monitor you.
- Famvir when taken with certain other drugs may change the effect of the medicine. If you are taking any other drug whether prescribed or non-prescribed, food supplement or herbal drug, you should consult your doctor before taking famvir.
- Children below 18 years of age should be prescribed famvir with caution.
- You should keep the blister area dry and clean.
- Do not wear tight clothes.
- If you are pregnant or plan to pregnant, you should consult your doctor.
- If you are a nursing woman taking famvir, you should avoid breast-feeding or consult your doctor.
Warning:
- Herpes is contagious in nature and you can infect other people.
- Famvir does not prevent the infection from spreading to others.
- Avoid sex with your partner as herpes is transmitted by contact.
- Do not allow any person to come in contact to the affected area.
- Do not stop medicine, without completing the course as directed by your doctor.
Overdose:
- If you suspect an overdose of famvir, you should seek immediately medical help.
Side Effects:
- The side effects of the medicine may vary from person to person.
- The more severe side effects of famvir may include allergic reactions (swelling of face, lip, throat and difficulty in respiration). If you observe these allergic reactions you should contact immediately to your doctor.
- More common side effects include dizziness, constipation, dry mouth, diarrhea, vomiting and headache.
- The rare side effects include confusions, convulsions, and tremor, skin rashes. If you observe any of these side effects, you should consult your doctor immediately.
- Some other side effects may also occur. In all such cases you should consult your doctor.
How to take:
- If you observe blisters or burning, you should start treatment immediately.
- You should take the medicine in appropriate doses only if prescribed by the doctor.
- The famvir can be taken with or without food. The tablet should be taken with full glass of water. Try to take the medicine at the same time daily.
- Keep the lesions or blisters dry and clean.
- If you missed a dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. If it is time to take next dose, take only a single dose. You should not take double dose.
- You should not stop famvir even if you are feeling good, with out consulting your doctor.
How to store:
- Famvir should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
- Medicine should be kept out of excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used.
