Glucotrol and Diabetes: Side Effects

“Glucotrol” is the brand name of the generic drug “Glipizide.”  This oral medication can only be prescribed by licensed health care professionals as treatment for Type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes

To understand Glucotrol, it is important to understand diabetes as an illness. This medical condition must be diagnosed by a doctor.  Diabetic patients suffer from a health condition where the human body is unable to control the amount of sugar, (or glucose), that is present in the body.   In addition to the consumption of naturally sweet or artificially sweetened foods, human beings are able to take in sugar from a variety of food products, including rice, potatoes, and bread.

Types of Diabetes

Untreated diabetes can trigger weight loss, blurred vision, increased exhaustion and genital itching.  Patients may also feel increased thirst. Diabetic patients generally fall into one of two main categories of diabetes: type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes develops when the body is unable to produce insulin.  Patients may be treated with insulin injections, as well as diet and exercise modifications.  Type 2 diabetes develops when the body is unable to create adequate levels of insulin. Other type 2 diabetic patients are insulin resistant, meaning that the insulin produced does not work efficiently.

Complications of Diabetes

Medical professionals will attempt to stave off the onset of diabetes in patients who possess higher categories of risk. Diabetes can adversely influence eyesight. It may also cause complications in the feet, as well as induce long term damage to major organs of the body such as the kidneys and heart.

About Glucotrol

Glucotrol can treat Type 2 diabetes.  This medication will stimulate the pancreas, thus causing the organ to increase its output of insulin. This drug, however, is not a replacement for insulin.  This may mean that patients will take this drug along with daily insulin intake.

Precautions

Patients who utilize Glucotrol per the recommendation of a doctor must remember that this drug is not a substitute for healthy diets and adequate physical activity.

Glucotrol use may cause low blood sugar. This may be avoided by maintaining a regular eating schedule and reducing alcohol consumption.   In general, this medication may also cause a variety of inconvenient side effects, including diarrhea or constipation, dizziness, itching, and headaches. Other patients report drowsiness, stomach pain, and skin rashes.

In rare instances, patients may experience anemia, cardiac complications, and notice a yellow tint in the eyes and skin.  Always consult your doctor if these conditions persist and/or cause extreme discomfort.

The effectiveness of this drug may negatively interact with the presence of oral contraceptives, aspirin, or heart medications in the body. It is wise to consult with your medical advisor about the interaction of this drug with drugs that you may already be taking.

Glucotrol Use

It is advised that patients take Glucotrol 30 minutes prior to consuming a meal. Your physician may create a specific schedule that regulates dosage amounts and times of the day to take this medication.  If you miss a dosage, always skip the missed dosage.  Do return to your schedule as soon as possible, but never take two dosages at the same time. This may add complications to your general health.

Patients must swallow the tablets in its whole form. Never chew, crush, or otherwise pierce this oral medication.

Glucotrol and your medical profile

Glucotrol may assist you in your treatment of type 2 diabetes. However, only a physician can assess your health profile and determine if use of this drug is appropriate. Do consult with your doctor about the potential benefits and side effects of this course of action.
