What Is Albuterol / Ventolin / Proventil?

 

Albuterol / Ventolin / Proventil is often applied in the treatment of asthma.  Albuterol / Ventolin / Proventil relaxes the bronchial muscles, thereby dilating the bronchial airways, making breathing easier and less work. It can also be used in the treatment of those suffering from emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

How To Use Albuterol / Ventolin / Proventil

Most commonly, albuterol / ventolin / proventil will be given to patients in inhaled preparations, but albuterol / ventolin / proventil can also come in tablet form, as a solution, and as a syrup.  The inhaled form is very effective, and usually starts working within fifteen minutes.  A single dose may last up to six hours.  The dosage instructions provided by your physician should be followed exactly.  Do not take this medication any other way than as prescribed. It is best to take each dose of albuterol / ventolin / proventil with a full glass of water.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Albuterol / Ventolin / Proventil?

Those suffering from any type of heart condition should inform their physician immediately, and use albuterol / ventolin / proventil with some caution.  Excessive use of albuterol / ventolin / proventil can have an adverse effect on the heart according to certain scientific studies.  Patients who experience certain side effects who are also suffering from a heart condition should notify their physician immediately.  Possible side effects for all users of albuterol / ventolin / proventil include:

  • Elevated blood pressure

Anyone suffering dramatically high blood pressure should discontinue use and inform their physician immediately.  Those patients who are also suffering from heart problems should seek treatment as soon as possible, and consult with a physician immediately.

  • Fast heart rate

Those who experience a quickened heart beat, especially if this condition is prolonged, should consult with a physician immediately and seek treatment where necessary.

  • Palpitations

Anyone experiencing severe heart palpitations, especially those with a preexisting heart condition, should immediately discontinue use and seek treatment.

  • Nausea

Patients may experience queasiness and even have trouble digesting food.  Anyone suffering from excessive nausea should consult with a  physician as soon as possible. Taking the medication with some food may lessen this side effect.

  • Dizziness

Anyone suffering bouts of dizziness should consult with a physician as soon as possible, especially if any type of vertigo is experienced.

  • Nervousness

A feeling of being jittery or nervous may be experienced by some users of this drug, and this side effect should be discussed with a  physician.  If the side effect persist, you may be advised to seek different treatment.

  • Heart burn

Patients suffering frequent heart burn due to treatment should consult with a physician.  There are many products that can be purchased over the counter to relieve this side effect, but before treating the side effect it should be discussed with a trained physician. 

  • Nose bleeds

If any excessive bleeding of the nose occurs, discontinue use of the drug and inform you physician as soon as possible.

  • Throat irritation

Patients may suffer from throat irritation, and this side effect should be discussed with your physician.  There are many treatments he may prescribe to relieve this side effect.

Warnings and Precautions Before Taking Albuterol / Ventolin / Proventil

Allergic reactions, while rare, may occur.  Anyone experiencing a possible allergic reaction should discontinue use and inform their physician as soon as possible.  The allergic reaction can cause shock, swelling, hives, and/or a rash.  If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your physician before continuing use of the drug and for treatment of the allergy.

What Should You Do If You Miss a Dose of Albuterol / Ventolin / Proventil?

If a dose of albuterol / ventolin / proventil has been skipped or missed, the patient should take the dose as soon as it is feasible to do so.  If it is close to the time for the next dose to be administered, however, it is important not to double dose.  Do not double the amount taken or in any way increase the amount taken to make up for a missed dose.

How To Store Albuterol / Ventolin / Proventil

 

Albuterol / Ventolin / Proventil should not be exposed to heat or flame of any kind, and stored in a refrigerated environment.  Ideally, albuterol should be stored between 59-86 degrees F°.  Do not freeze this drug.  Albuterol / Ventolin / Proventil should be kept out of reach of children.
