Felbatol
Generic Name : The generic name of the medicine is felbamate and it is used alone or in combination with other medicines to control seizures. , if the other medicines are ineffective to control seizures. It is believed to act on CNS (central nervous system) and alters the chemical balance in brain responsible for seizures.
Felbatol cannot cure epilepsy but control seizures. Felbatol is available in tablet and solution forms.
Felbatol can also be used for other purposes.
Precautions:
- If you are allergic to felbatol or any other similar drug, you should not take felbatol.
- If you have or had in past liver problem, discuss with your doctor before taking felbatol.
- If you are taking carbamazepine, phenytoin and valproic acid, you should inform your doctor before taking felbatol.
- Felbatol when taken with certain other drugs may change the effect of the medicine. If you are taking any other drug whether prescribed or non-prescribed, food supplement or herbal drug, you should consult your doctor before taking felbatol.
- Children and old people should be prescribed felbatol with caution.
- If you have a blood related disease such as anemia, you should inform your doctor.
- If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, you should consult your doctor.
- If you are a nursing woman taking felbatol, you should avoid breast-feeding or consult your doctor.
Warning:
- Felbatol may cause dizziness, avoid driving and operation of heavy machineries, if you are on felbatol.
- Avoid alcohol, as alcohol may increase dizziness.
- You should regularly visit to your doctor for complete checkup.
- Your doctor should carry our liver function test at regular interval.
- You may also sometime notice a problem in vision. Consult with the doctor.
- If you have to travel during peak hours. Use sunscreen or protective clothes to avoid sunlight as felbatol may increase sensitivity of the skin towards sunlight.
- While going out alone, you should carryout a detailed identity card with you mentioning the medicine you are taking and complete address / phone number of your doctor.
Overdose:
- An overdose of felbatol may cause the symptoms like dizziness, diarrhea, and irregular heart rate.
- You should seek immediate medical help, if you observe any of these symptoms.
Side Effects:
- The side effects of the medicine may vary from person to person.
- The more severe side effects of felbatol may include allergic reactions (swelling of face, lip, throat and difficulty in respiration), symptoms of aplastic anemia (declining of red blood cells), worsening of seizures, yellowness of skin and eyes, abdominal pain, fever and soar throat. If you observe these allergic reactions you should contact immediately to your doctor.
- More common side effects include dizziness, constipation, dry mouth, diarrhea, insomnia, vomiting and headache.
- Some other side effects may also occur. In all such cases you should consult your doctor.
How to take:
- You should take the medicine in appropriate doses only if prescribed by the doctor.
- The felbatol can be taken with or without food. The tablet should be taken with full glass of water.
- The oral solution should be shaken properly and should be measured by a measuring spoon.
- Try to take the medicine at the same time daily.
- If you missed a dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. If it is time to take next dose, take only a single dose. You should not take double dose.
- You should not stop felbatol even if you are feeling good, with out consulting your doctor.
How to store:
- Felbatol should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
- Medicine should be kept out of excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used.
