Ethotoin:
Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is ethotoin and is used for controlling convulsions in certain type of epilepsy. It is generally used in combination with other medicines. Ethotoin should be taken only if prescribed by a doctor. The medicine is available in tablet forms.
Precaution:
- If you are allergic to ethotoin, you should not take this medicine.
- If you have diabetes, liver problem or blood disease, discuss with your doctor before taking the medicine.
- If you are suffering from porphyria or fever, you should inform your doctor.
- If two drugs are taken together, they may interact with each other. If you are taking any prescribed or non-prescribed, food supplements or herbal medicine, you should inform your doctor before taking ethotoin.
- If you drink or smoke, you should inform your doctor.
Warning:
- If you are on ethotoin, you may feel drowsy. So, you should avoid driving and operation of heavy machineries after taking ethotoin.
- Ethotoin may reduce the effect of birth control pills, so you should try some other birth control methods.
- If you have a plan to go for surgery including dental surgery, tell your doctor that you are on ethotoin.
- If you have to take antacids, keep a gap of 3 hours between antacids and ethotoin.
- You should get yourself regularly checkedby your doctor.
- If you are going out alone, you should keep an identity card with you mentioning details of medication and address/phone number of your doctor.
Overdose:
- You should not use double dose at a time.
- The symptoms of overdose may vary from person to person.
- The symptoms of overdose may cause some side effects as mentioned below. If you observe any of the symptoms or any other symptoms, you should contact to your doctor immediately.
Side Effects:
- The common side effects of ethotoin constipation, diarrhea,dizziness and nausea.
- The rare side effects include vomiting, swelling , yellowness of skin and eyes, skin rashes, irregular heart beats, chest pain,confusion, fever, sore throat,headache, difficult breathing , uncontrolled eye movement or impaired vision, poor control of body movement , peeling of the skin, dark yellow urine, pain in stomack and fainting.
- Some other side effects may also be observed. If you observe any of the symptoms as mentioned or any other symptom, you should talk to your doctor immediately.
How to take:
- Take ethotoin only if prescribed by the doctor.
- Take the medicine with a full glass of water. Swallow the medicine as whole. Don’t cut or chew the medicine.
- Medicine can be taken with or without food. If your stomach is upset, take the medicine with food.
- If you have missed a dose, take as soon as you remember. If it is the time of your next dose, take a single dose. Do not take double dose.
How to store:
- The medicine should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children
- The ethotoin should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used.
