Estazolam

Generic name
                Estazolam is better name for its trade name: Prosom.

What is Estazolam used for?
                This is a drug class known as benzodiazepines. It affects chemicals in the brain that may cause anxiety, insomnia and can lead to the patient becoming unbalanced. The main use of Estazolam is to induce sleep and help in relaxation.

Warnings and Precautions

                Because it induces sleep, you should be careful at all times when driving or working dangerous machinery. If there is the slightest tendency to dizziness or drowsiness, you should avoid these activities at once. The drug should only be taken at nigh times when you are preparing to go to bed.      

Alcohol

 

                The use of alcohol should be avoided when taking any medication, but especially when taking Estazolam because it may increase drowsiness.

                There is evidence to suggest that Estazolam may be habit forming with a problem of dependency. This may be psychological and physical and there may be withdrawal effects if the patient stops taking the drug suddenly, especially after a period of high dosage.

                If you have been taking Estazolam for more than 5-7 days, you must not stop, and continue on the regime set down by your doctor. Most doctors may wish to gradually reduce your dosage.

                The taking of Estazolam should not be taken lightly, and you should discuss the matter with your doctor first. Especially, if you suffer from narrow-angle glaucoma. There is recorded evidence to suggest Estazolam might make the condition worse.

                You should also talk to your doctor first, before taking the drug if you suffer from any of the following: Kidney disease, liver disease, and respiratory diseases such as emphysema, bronchitis and asthma.
                You should not take Estazolam first without talking to your doctor,  if you suffer any sign of depression or have suicidal thoughts.

                You may still be able to take the drug with any of these problems, but your doctor may wish to reduce your dosage accordingly.

                Caution should be taken if you are also taking any other sedative or pain killer such as antidepressants. There may also be problems with muscle relaxants and antihistamines.

Pregnancy and planning a family

 

                Although there is no known recorded evidence that Estazolam has caused births defects in an unborn infant, most doctors do not advise it. You should not take the drug if you are pregnant or become pregnant during the treatment. Although there is no evidence to suggest that Estazolam can be passed through breast milk it is not advised to do so before asking your doctor first.

60 and over

                You could be more likely to experience the side effects of Estazolam if you are over 60. To this end, the doctor may give you a lower dosage.

Overdose

 

                If there is the slightest danger that your or anyone else has overdosed on Estazolam you should seek immediate medical help. Take any drug containers with you to help in the diagnosis.
               
                The symptoms to watch for are confusion, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and sleepiness. More worrying symptoms can result as: difficulty walking and talking, slow heartbeat, the general appearance of being drunk, resulting in unconsciousness.

                There may not be a problem if you miss a dose of your treatment, but do not double it to make up the difference. Inform your doctor if there are any irregularities in your periods of taking the drug.

How to Take

 

                The drug should be taken with a full glass of water, and stick strictly to the doctor’s guidelines. Because Estazolam causes drowsiness, you should only take it when going to bed. As it may cause dizziness, there could be a danger from falling down.

Side Effects

 

                If you should suffer any of the following symptoms you should seek medical help at once. Suffering any allergic reaction such as difficulty in breathing, from swelling of the lips, face and tongue, or the closing of the throat.

                Other signs to watch for are: soreness of the mouth or throat, rashes, yellowing of the eyes or skin. There may be other symptoms ranging from severe confusion, changes of vision or even hallucinations.

                There have been some recorded cases of less serious side effects, but they should all be reported to your doctor. These may range from: clumsiness, dizziness, and drowsiness, to depression. Also reported are cases of headache, dry mouth, changes in behaviour, and decreased sex drive.

Storage

 

                Keep the medicine in a safe place out of the reach of children. Keep it away from heat and direct sunlight, and if you have to keep it in a refrigerator, do not freeze solid.
