Gatifloxacin: Formulation and Evaluation, Physico Chemical Properties
Generic Name
Generic name of the medicine is gatifloxacin. It is an antibiotic and belongs to the family of quinolone antibiotics called as fluoroquinolones. Gatifloxacin is available in tablet and injection forms (gatifloxacin injection alone and gatifloxacin in 5% dextrose intravenous injection) and should be taken the right dose of the medicine only if prescribed by the medical officer.
Gatifloxacin find many applications as an antibiotic and is generally used for treating acute sinus infections, lung, skin, certain types of gonorrhea infections, pneumonia, kidney and urinary tract infections (UTI) caused by bacteria. Gatifloxacin kills the bacteria that are responsible for infection or disease.
Precaution
- If your doctor recommends you gatifloxacin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to gatifloxacin and any other antibiotics of quinolone family.
- If you or any other member in your family had or have diabetes, seizures, kidney, liver or heart disease. You should inform the doctor before taking gatifloxacin.
- Tell your doctor if you have a low potassium level in your blood or have irregular heart beat or has ever had prolonged QT interval or have irregular electrocardiogram (EKG), as gatifloxacin may alter your heartbeats.
- If you are planning to have a surgery including dental surgery, inform your surgeon that you are on gatifloxacin.
- If you are taking any other medicine whether prescribed, non-prescribed, food supplements, vitamins or herbal products, you should inform your doctor.
- Antacids, multi vitamins or dietary supplements may contain aluminum, magnesium or iron and you should take all such medicines or supplements at least four hour after taking gatifloxacin.
- If you are pregnant or breast feeding mother, make sure to inform your doctor. Although what side effects it may cause to unborn child is not known, it may not be recommended for pregnant and breast feeding women.
- If you have or had tenderness, swelling, stiffness or pain in moving a muscle, you should inform your doctor before taking gatifloxacin. If you develop the symptoms after taking gatifloxacin, stop the medicine and inform your doctor.
Warning
- Gatifloxacin may cause convulsions and you should inform your doctor immediately if you feel increased pressure in head, tremors, hallucinations or nervousness.
- Gatifloxacin should not be recommended to children below a8 years of age.
- The medicine may cause dizziness and therefore after taking gatifloxacin do not drive and operate heavy machineries.
- Fatifloxacin may change your heartbeat and sugar. Continuous monitoring of heart function and blood sugar should be carried out at regular intervals.
Overdose
- You should only use the recommended dosage of gatifloxacin and if you suspect an overdose you should immediately contact to your doctor.
Missed Dose
- If you missed a dose, take as soon as you remember the missed dose. If it is almost the time of your next dose take a single dose.
- Never take double dose at a time.
Side Effects
- Some of the serious side effects include difficulty in breathing, swelling in face, throat, lips, severe headache, sweating, and convulsion, uncontrolled movement of body, rash or blisters in the skin, chest pain, fainting, fast or slow heartbeat, low or high blood sugar, paranoia, hives, anxiety, depression, agitation, hallucinations, bloody stool, dark urine, pain and numbness or weakness or tingling in hands or feet.
- Some common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth and vaginal inflammation.
- If any of the side effects as mentioned above or any other side effects are observed, you should immediately contact to your doctor.
How to take
- The medicine should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
- The medicine can be taken with or without food and the tablet should be swallowed with a glass of water.
How to store
- The medicines should be stored at room temperature and out of reach of children.
- The medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used and should be destroyed to avoid misuse of the medicines.
