Shingles or Herpes Zoster
Herpes zoster also known as shingles is caused by the same virus that produces childhood chickenpox. This infection can be contracted ONLY by those who have previously been exposed to chickenpox. This represents a reactivation of the "dormant" chickenpox virus. Common symptoms include a burning pain to the skin, always appearing on ONE SIDE of the chest, back, abdomen, extremity, or face. The zone of pain then progresses to a raised, blistery, red rash. By this time, the diagnosis can be made more easily. Shingles on the face represents a more SERIOUS problem, particularly if there is a lesion on the nose. When this area of the face is involved, the possibility of ocular infection increases. Herpes zoster infection of the eye can lead to BLINDNESS without prompt treatment. Treatment includes pain medications and, occasionally, steroid medications. It has been shown that steroid medications reduce the pain associated with this problem. These medications will also diminish pain seen after the rash has disappeared. Some antiviral agents in oral (Zovirax), and in cream form, have also been used with success. See your doctor for treatment of this problem.
