Acne and Skin Blemishes
Acne is predominantly a problem that occurs during the teenage years. It can, however, continue into young adulthood in some people. Acne refers to any skin blemish or condition which results largely from the plugging of hair follicles and skin glands with secondary bacterial infection. Distribution favors the face, chest, back, and shoulders. Diet may be a factor in the development of acne. Fatty foods and sweets are best avoided by most individuals with this condition.
Self care is important in treating this problem. The use of an antibacterial soap (Clearasil or Fostex) will help dry up the skin and also remove dead skin cells on the surface. Washing several times a day is recommended. Warm wet compresses, several times a day, applied to blemished areas can speed healing. Antibacterial, topical drying agents are also popular. Benzoyl peroxide (available as a lotion or gel in 2.5-10% strengths) has proven effective in controlling acne and killing the bacteria that are responsible for this problem.
Large deep acne lesions, or cysts, can lead to scarring. In cases such as this a Dermatologist is suggested. Your doctor may prescribe an oral or topical (applied to the skin as solution, gel, or ointment) antibiotic (erythromycin 2%solution) that works by killing the bacteria
