Knee Injury : Fracture
Most knee fractures occur from a direct blow to the knee joint (e.g. fall, motor vehicle accident, crushing injury). By and large, the most common knee injury is the sprain. When discussing fractures of the knee, three different bones may be involved: femur (thigh bone), tibia (lower leg), or the patella
(knee cap).Common symptoms include marked swelling and pain to the joint, whether at rest or with any attempted motion. The patient is generally unable to walk without pain.Evaluation includes examination of the knee for nerve and blood vessel integrity (pulses, sensation, movement). Bone x-rays will show the type and the extent of the fracture. Significant displacement of the fracture fragments that results in improper joint alignment is particularly worrisome. In these special situations, a surgical procedure to "fixate" the fracture site is necessary to allow for adequate bone healing and maintenance of normal knee joint function. In most cases, rigid immobilization of the knee joint is required (cast or splint). Bone healing takes 5 to 6 weeks.Rehabilitation through the expertise of a Physical Therapist, is necessary to help restore normal function to the injured knee joint. The Orthopaedic Surgeonis the expert in the management of these injuries.
