Witch Hazel

Other Common Names: Hazel nut, Spotted alder, Tobacco wood, Winterbloom.

Latin description: Hamamelis virginiana.

Parts to use: Bark and sometimes leaves.

Chemical constituents: Gallotanins, proanthocyanidins, saponins, choline, resins, flavonoids, volatile oil.

Actions: Astringent, hemostatic, sedative, tonic.

Medicinal Uses & Benefits

Traditional treatment for cuts, bruises, hemorrhoids, and sore muscles.
Externally the tea is rubbed on cuts, bruises, insect stings, sore muscles and joints.
EXTRACT = Put 2½ C. distilled water and enough bark that can be thoroughly submerged into a pan and bring to a boil; cover and simmer 30 minutes; strain and use to make witch hazel water.

Witch Hazel stops bleedings, excessive menstruation
and is good for hemorrhoids and varicose veins.
Witch Hazel can also be used as a gargle and to stop
any kind of bleeding.

Dosage

Capsules: Bark- 3-4 “0” capsules 2-3x daily.
Decoction: Bark- 1-2 cups daily.
Infusion: Leaves- 1/2 cup 3x daily.
