St. John’s Wort

Other Common Names: Goatweed, Johnswort.

Latin description: Hypericum perforatum.

Parts to use: Aerial.

Chemical constituents: Hypericin, flavonoids, tannin,
volatile oil, pigment, resin.

Actions: Antispasmodic, antiviral, astringent, expectorant, nervine, vulnerary.

Medicinal Uses & Benefits

Leaves are astringent and used on burns and bites.
Primary herb for occasional depression, but not used for chronic depression.
Extract shows promise as antiviral against AIDS. Effective against staph infections.
Used for flu, asthma, burns, and bruises.

St. John's Wort is noted for its ability to take the edge off depressions and melancholy. It has been called 'Nature's Prozac.' St. John's wort has also shown antiviral activities.
Warning: The same food restrictions apply as for other MAO inhibitors. It may make the skin more sensitive to sun exposure.
Another Chinese name is Di Er Cao.

Dosage

Capsules: 3-4 “0” capsules 3-4x daily.
Infusion: 1-2 ounces at a time throughout the day. For a
therapeutic dose you may take up to 2-3 cups but NOT
for long term, for a few days only! unless you are
dealing with a condition such as AIDS where it would
take advanced dosages for an extended length of time
and should only be done under the supervision of an
experienced practitioner.
