Juniper

Other Common Names: Common Juniper

Latin description: Juniperus communis.

Parts to use: Dried berries.

Chemical constituents: Volatile oils such as pinene, myrcene, sabinene, linonene, terpinene, camphene, thujoene, cadinene, flavones, resins, tannins.

Actions: Antiseptic, carminative, diuretic, rubefacient, stomachic, tonic.

Medicinal Uses & Benefits

Urinary antiseptic (disinfects urine) and abortifacient.
Used to flush kidneys. The infusion is drunk for short periods, and only during periods of fluid retension, at the rate of 1 cup per day sipped slowly. Juniper contains more potassium than healthy so it is unwise to continue treatment past the point of reduction of swelling. Added barley water can be beneficial. Is best in blends with other herbs.
Used for cystitis, urethritis, urinary tract infection, and urinary stones.
Also used for arthritis, rheumatism, gout, neuralgia, myalgia (home made oil in liniment form) and hair loss (few drops of homemade oil in rinse).

CAUTION: Do not use Juniper berries in long term applications.
Do not use the larger dosages except in very short
term use. Do not use on individuals that have weakened
kidneys.
Dosage

Capsules: 1-2 “0” capsules 4 times daily.
Decoction: Drink 1 cup 2x daily.
